Lovely light. The blurred deer in the foreground spoils it for me, though.

Very nice. The light is just perfect (and the foremost deer can be cropped out of the frame very easily).

I would be tempted to crop out the closest one. The rest of the photo is very nice.

those deer are starving. The herd needs to be managed to what the land will sustain.

I like the cropping idea but perhaps a bit of the clone stamp around the blurred deer's hind area would leave a bit more "room" for the other one?

If you crop the deer in the foreground you lose the most important part of the light. You can clone stamp around, but the result's gonna be an obvious touchup job. It's one of those shots that just didn't quite come off. We all have them. Sometimes you just have to admit it didn't work.

thanks!

so the consensus is that the lighting is working and that the foreground deer is not.  here's another twist, would the overall image be better if the foreground deer were focused and the other two not?  i don't have that version.  they were quick to move :)

i did crop this to 4x5, but do have the full frame 2x3 version availble... it has more room to the left, but a lot more room below the foreground deer.

if you all don't mind, i will post two more that i kind of like later today/this evening.

Not only a vital part of the light, but the base of the tree, which anchors the shot.

It might have worked better; we're more used to seeing sharp foregrounds and blurred backgrounds, for obvious reasons.

Mind? I'd love to see them.

This is just a very quick fix, about 3 minutes. It gives you an idea of what is possible given much more time...and is it worth it?

I was planning to try exactly what Peter tried.
It looks promising to me.

Is it a good job? Yes. Was it worth the trouble? ???

I think "the shot" here would be of the left deer in Peter's revised version but taken with a longer lens and more tightly cropped. The backlighting is great…just needs more reach IMO.

OP is fine as-is, you croppers, cloners, hair-splitters, perfectionists you ;)

It has rhythm, it has depth (both are lost with cropping and/or cloning). It is not perfect, but it is nice, as the focus is selective and on the rim-lighted dear.

Slobodan, thanks.

so i guess i do "have" the shot where the deer in front is looking right at me and "in focus" BUT it moved it's head (body is nice and focused) but the head, eyes, snout, especially the back-lit ears are all blurry / double edges. so that sucks.  that was my favorite :)

anyway, here's some more.  they are simpler and in that way i don't entirely hate them, but... it'll be a month of coming back to them and looking at them for me to be able to like or not like. ha!

My favorite among the new ones is the second. The deer is beautifully lighted and looking right at the camera.

+1

As for post treatments, were it mine, I might try further blurring the foreground (then, of course, you’d have to touch the background as well).

the top one of the three i just posted is my least favorite.  anyway i do like the one i originally posted plus the middle one.  the opportunity is there with the lighting.  i thought about it before i walked over to the location for a couple weeks.  i do wish the one with the foreground deer was in focus/the dear head didnt move, but since it wasnt i went with the mid ground focus one.  a good thing is, i should have all summer to ho back and hope for more opportunities as these three and 4 more basically live at this property!

Yes, the second is a beauty. I'd clone out, or at least reduce the luminance of, the brightly-lit branch towards the top, though.
