Awagami Bamboo ICC profile and Media Type.. EPSON 3800
« on: May 31, 2018, 09:20:09 pm »

I bought a sample pack of Awagami paper to try out but I can't find profiles.  I have an Epson 3800 printer and I also need to know the media type... I think it is Fine Art Velvet but I a not sure.  This paper is expensive so I want to do as much as I can correctly before I press "Print!"

Thanks,

David

I don't know how they compare but Hahnemuhle Bamboo uses Velvet Fine Art setting.  I cannot help you with the profile.  If the paper is relatively new, it may be that they have not had a profile made for the 3800 which is a rather 'old' printer.

Alan thank you.  I called FreeStyle in Los Angeles where I bought the paper and they said to use Velvet Fine Art as the media type.  They didn't say what ICC profile to use.  I wrote back and asked and am waiting a reply.

Id' experiment but this paper was expensive and only 1 sheet of 18 different papers came in the sampler.  They are all a very warm white.  I wonder if I really need an ICC profile?

Google is your friend...

A search of "Awagami Bamboo ICC profile" resulted in this page showing up: http://www.printyourphotos.ca/a-i-j-p-icc-profiles/

But they only have an Epson 3880 profile which would be close but not accurate...

Sadly it seems that the company is in the process of creating new profiles as stated here: https://awagami.com/pages/icc-profiles

Too bad....this stuff is supposed to be easier, huh?

Thank you Jeff... I did Google it last week which piqued my interest.  I recently spoke with Awagami and Freestyle (their US distributor) and thought I'd share what I found...

Freestyle says:

"Hello David,

For all the papers, select Epson Velvet Fine Art for the media setting and the profile in your print driver.
We then recommend selecting "Photoshop Manages Colors".

Additionally, under "Rendering Intent", we recommend selecting "perceptual" with "black point compensation" checked.

Finally, because Awagami papers tend to render a bit flat, Eric Joseph who is the authority on Inkjet printing, suggests using the Velvet Fine Art profile setting you already have in the 3800 printer driver but also upping the Saturation and Contrast a bit to punch the color.

Hope this helps!"

Awagami - suggested creating custom profiles.  They also said "Eric knows his stuff."

So I will test using the Epson Velvet Fine Art setting and hope for the best!

They are telling you to use the Epson canned profile for their paper?  :o
