Soft Proofing In C1 11

One of the few things I miss about Lightroom is the ability to soft proof with the original and soft proof side by side.  It made comparisons and adjustments much easier.  In trying this with Capture One, I can get close but I'm one step away.

Once I have my finished image, I create a clone variant.  This is my proof copy.  I open both variants with the proof copy having the focus.  Next I select the Output Tab (gear icon) and select a Process Recipe that has the ICC Profile I want to use.

My intent next is when I select Show Recipe Proofing (glasses icon), only my soft proofing variant will change.  Unfortunately, both variants change.  I tried this both with and without Edit All Selected Variants selected.  No difference.

Am I missing something?  Or is the software so close, but oh so far away?

The "Show Recipe Proofing" controls how all images are rendered so I guess that means you are so close to having what you want. Sounds like a good feature request to make to Phase One - to do that open a support ticket, just in case you didn't already know that.

A workaround would be to open the two images in different sessions then drag the windows, with the different settings you need, original in one session, soft proof in the other, to put the images alongside each other, clunky but possible.

The session suggestion sounds like it might work but up till now, I haven't done anything with sessions.


What I've be recently doing is creating an adjustment layer on the photo I want to print.  This layer is for my soft proofing changes.

Next I'll toggle the Show Recipe Proofing on and notice the change.  Any changes I need to make, are made in the new adjustment layer. 

My comparison now is between original (new adjustment layer off/Show Recipe Proofing off) and soft proof (new adjustment layer on/Show Recipe Proofing on).  An extra step and I can't compare the two side by side but it is workable.

That sounds like a good idea, keeping display and print within the same variant.  :-)

That's kind of what I was thinking.  Initially I created a separate variant for printing.  Not being able to uniquely label the variants, I sometimes got mixed with which was the printing variant.  Especially if I had lots of variants.

With the printing changes stored in a layer, I just need to toggle that layer on when I want to print / off when I want to create a jpg.
