Thunderbolt 2.5" Drive/SSD 'Sled' US$80
« on: May 08, 2018, 06:31:51 am »

This little sucker isn't sold anymore, but is VERY, VERY handy and equally hard to find.

Originally intended as a dock for their own GoFlex 2.5 drives, filmmakers & photogs quickly discovered that since Seagate used an industry standard SATA connector on the sucker, the dock will power and ready/write to ANY caseless (aka bare) 2.5" harddrive or SSD.

It's a great way to make fast backups in the field with minimal gear via Thunderbolt on bare drives.  Kind of a poor man's RED SSD dock.

You plug your bare 2.5" disk or SSD into the sled, connect to your Thunderbolt port and Bob's your Aunt. If you hit google you'll see images of it being used accordingly. All you need are some cheap empty SSD storage cases.

While this method works fine, because the SATA connector sits at a height designed for a housed drive, a bare HD/SSD will sit at an angle - not a great idea.

The fix is to tape a stack of app. 7 business cards to the deck of the sled to create a base to hold a bare SSD or HD  level with the connector.

With this tweak, any 2.5" HD or SSD slides right in, level & secure (see pic of what I mean).  We've used it like this for years and works like a charm. We removed our taped card stack for the picture to show the Seagate logo.

You can rubber band your bare SSD or HD in place and carry it attached to the dock ready to plug in if desired.

No case, no Thunderbolt cable, but will include a cable that allows the unit to also be used as a Thunderbolt to eSata adapter. Plug cable into the connector on the sled, plug other end into an eSata drive or dock and away you go (see pic).

Price of US$80 includes shipping by Canada Post Normal Post.

Payment by PP (add 3.5%) or EMT if in Canada.
