Phase One Raw files request
« on: October 04, 2006, 04:07:08 pm »

Hi, I'm looking for Phase One P21 or P45 Raw files, portrait fashion or beauty, I would like to use the C1Pro trial to develop them myself and look at skintone.

I think a few of us would be interested. Any chance of giving the files a public link?

Otherwise yousendit.com could be very useful for distribution.

You can purchase the Measuring Megabytes disk for just $13.95. It contains quite a few P45 files as well as gigabytes of others.

I think Edmund is looking for images of people, rather than test setups.  I'd be interested in some fashion/portraits as well.

Michael,

I'd be delighted to buy the disk, but what I really want is fashion and portrait samples, shot under various lights. Is there a good set of model samples (various skin complexions) on the disk ?

I don't need still life, but need to see skin tone.

I don't want to bump this thread for response, but I thought I should say that in the mean time I've located Leaf samples from the Aptus series here:

[a href=\"http://www.leaf-photography.com/pages/raw_images.aspx]http://www.leaf-photography.com/pages/raw_images.aspx[/url]

I've looked at them with my old PS CS converter on my old Powerbook, and they're already pretty good there. Skin tone is excellent IMHO. Still looking for Phase data, but I am noticing one interesting fact: The Leaf sites are chock full of imagery. Which should be a good thing if you want to sell to photographers ...

Hi Edmond,

I'm not sure it is a good idea to compare raw data from different systems with shots taken in different lighting etc. I understand your predicament but I reccomend you taking a test shoot with both backs at the same time and seeing for yourself. I have about 40,000 raw files from my P25, all people pictures, shot in natural light and exclusively at f4 and 400 ISO. I've a system of forcing exposure and pulling back in C1 that gives me the look I want. If you were to just open my files in C1 before adjustments you'd probably scream. I use a system just like I did on film of overexpose and under develop. The 'look' I get is spot on for what I want and the skin tones are sublime. If you shoot flash or at 100 iso then my shots would be of no use to you whatsoever. Mastery of Capture One is really important too. It's not hard to get great pictures, it's just too easy to mess up if you haven't set up the defaults to suit your workflow. You have film curve options, look (styles) options, output colour space options, to be tweaked then just the usual contrast, exposure, colour, noise cancellation, anti banding etc.
It took me about a month to really get set up and start getting the best out of my P25. Partly because RAW working was new to me but also because I had to get used to the subtle tonal options that are available to you by a change of exposure or a change of film curve. The pictures were good out of the box but like with most photographic processes the persuit of excellence takes you deep into experimentation and critical analysis. Two years on, my P25 is a tool I just use without any doubt of how to make my pictures 'sing'. It's just brilliant.

Damien,

I believe I know what a Raw file is. I need some files to show me whether skin texture is there or not.

By the way, the Leaf samples are really nice. Nice skin texture, very editable. Phase ? Haven't seen any files yet.

And yes, the local dealer. Who has sold me several EOS-1Ds bodies in the past. Visibly doesn't want to let me do a trial. Who knows, maybe something is wrong with his demo back. I think something is wrong with my buying a back from him in the future.

Hi Edmund

You stoppeed by our booth at Photokina and we spent sometime going over Phase One  things as well as showing you some files from a recent fashion shooti in Fashion week.  Being on other sides of the pond makes it rather hard to help you.  I am sure if you call the Phase One office in Denamrk someone there will be glad to assist.  You can also see tons of imgaes at
 http://www.phaseone.com/Content/Gallery/Index/Portrait.aspx
and under the gallery heading on our home there is also fashion shots.  There are tons of photogpaher who live by our image quaility and yes you can see the texture of the skin. I hope this helps.

Well met, Kevin!

I was indeed very pleased to meet you at Photokina, indeed meeting people is the reason for going there, no ?  I remember sitting with you, and a gentleman you called over (was it Walter Borchenko ?) showed me some catwalk shoots and did some creative color manipulation on them. I was VERY impressed with Walter's selective color edits.  In fact I was amazed both at Walter's ability to choose the color manipulations and at Capture One's ability to effect them - Unfortunately, I really wasn(t impressed by THOSE files themselves as I think I indicated, and am looking for better samples. Although I like the portrait gallery you link to,  precisely to avoid being taken in by the added value from a master retoucher, I'd like to see the Raw files.

Let me recap: C1 looks incredibly powerful; as a color consultant and retoucher I do of course enjoy watching a fellow virtuoso at work, a 5 minute demonstration from another master is always a pleasure. I am quite convinced that Capture One is able to do almost everything I could ask for in a Raw converter and has a host of creative possibilities.  As a retoucher and color consultant I was blown out by the demo, C1 is a definite winner, about three years ahead of PS or Lightroom !  as a photographer however I'm still hungry for information, even more so as it seems that different models of back (P21, P30) have different chips.

I think my hesitation is typical of a situation we have with all backs -people hesitate to make the investment beciause they don't feel quite comfortable with the information they have. After all BMW and Mercedes both make very good cars but they also differ a lot in their specific market appeal. I'm quite convinced that I could use either Phase or Leaf, and both are reported to be rock-stable products with no hardware issues. But given a choice there might be one whose "drive" I prefer.

FWIW,I've read in numerous places that the PRO version is only scheduled for
release at the end of Q2 in 2007,which to me is May which is still 8 months away.

The Lite version is scheduled to ship much earlier if what i have read is accurate.

My raw file is here:

 http://homepage.mac.com/damienlovegrove/FileSharing5.html

Shot at 400 ISO yesterday 1/30th @f2.2 using a 100mm HC lens, H1 camera on a monopod in the rain in Cumbria UK. We sheltered under a railway arch and I took this shot of 2 sisters. Loads of shadow, skin, etc.

I hope this helps show how a 2 year old P25 looks at the limit.

I got a disk called
"Phase One Image Samples" September 2006
P25 vs P45
P20 vs P30

I got it from Phase One themselves. It has Black to gray gradient color sticker on it with a white line drwing of an easel.

Damien,

I had an interesting time spinning that file of yours through PS, C1 and Raw developer.

Any chance for a few more samples ? I'm greedy !

Okay then they are at the same link.

I shot the same girl on a Canon 1DSmk2 using an EF 135mm f/2L USM prime lens at f3.2 with the camera set to 200iso and a month or so later on my H1 P25 at 400iso using my 210 lens at f4 (wide open) the shutter speed was down to 100th and I used my monopod. Again I've enclosed the jpegs I processed for your interest. This is not meant to be a comparison as the light was very different and the iso is different. I hope this helps.

Damien.

PS: I'll pull these files off my Idisc when you have them as I'm short of space.

Thank you for the files, I've got them.
Like the previous one, this Phase file has this painterly effect, a bit, with noise on the neck and color noise on the sweater. I assume when the ISO goes down the definition improves ? It's clear the skin texture is there, one can play with the software to render it.
The Canon photo is surprisingly good.
