A question:

How do fellow Aperture users achieve softer b&w results with the in-built monochrome filter?

Mine have been very 'hard' and not particularly pleasing to the eye. The only example I have is below which isn't a particularly great image to start with:

There's a few options you can play with ...

'sharpen'  > intensity and radius
'edge sharpen' > intensity, edges and falloff

in combination with  'shadows and highlights'   (& advanced)

I am sure you could get good results

I usally use these options to give a soft picture a bit more 'bite'
I am sure it can be used the other way around too.. to soften a picture.

You can either soften your picture before you monochrome it or after you monochrome it..
I don'n know wich will give you the best result ....

I am not sure how many additional requests you need for action, but I love Aperture after 1 year's use. I am not so comfortable, however, to not need a forum. So, if you are on the fence, I would like to add my vote to help push you over.........Please create an Aperture forum.

I have not paid much attention to Aperture because when I discovered its original fatal flaw (the database) it didn't meet my needs and I shelved it.

But now it looks like a real contender and I plan on spending more time with it. A tutorial would be a lot of work, and the program isn't one that I'm that familar with – yet.

Anyone else want an Aperture forum?

YES, it is looking more interesting to me now.
I would like some ideas on workflow and asset management with Aperture (whether to use Apertures Library or not).
I am considering buying it now. They also have a trial download now.

Thank's Michael, that's great to see an Aperture forum. Can we expect to see more reviews/opinions on Aperture as time progresses, and you become more familiar with it?

Thanks again

I just spent a day with an Apple trainer getting more up to speed with Aperture, so, yes, I'll definately be providing more insight into things Aperturish.

Excellent

In a couple of words, what are your feelings on the 'new' Aperture? (you can of course expand more so if you wish... )

This is a genuine question, not an attack or dispute of any kind: but what differentiates these two apps from other options to merit a separate forum? Since the forum is growing steadily, would it be useful to change the categories slightly: make a category say "RAW processing & file management", then add forums "Aperture". "Lightroom", and "Other". It can then be naturally extended to include other apps if enough discussion accumulates...?
