Telephoto on Fuji GFX options
« on: April 17, 2018, 05:34:08 pm »

Anyone any experience of using a 3rd party telephoto lens via adapter on the Fuji GFX 50s?

I need something around 200mm and so would be interested if anyone has found a MF lens and adapter combination that produces good results ?

Thanks

pentax 645 600mm lens with a fotodiox pentax to GFX adapter is reported to give excellent results, so any of the pentax 645 lens
Fuji just announced a GFX 240mm lens as well

If you need long teles and are not too concerned about corners, I would get an af-adapter and a good Canon tele. Those teles are top and cheaper than good mf teles. Also the af is good with the adapter.

Another possibillity is a Contax 645 apo 350mm with an af adapter from gfx to Contax 645.
Nice and sharp with good corners but much slower af than the Canons.

If you just need mf there are many options:
Very good:  Hasselblad cfi 350mm, Hasselblad 250mm cfi, Contax 200mm apo sonnar for c/y. Made for a smaller format,
but I have tested it and is works very very well on the gfx (very heavy)
Medium good:  Mamiya 300mm and 200mm. Pentax mf teles.
Hasselblad 350 fe teles are not in the same class.

Also if you need longer leles, the Canon 800mm manual focus is very very good. But just on a tripod!!
Not bad corners.

From what I have tested, I would say the Contax Apo-sonnar 200mm f.2 is better than everything else.
Just very heavy and mf. Canon 200mm f.1.8 should be very close and does have af. If used wide open that is a BIG +. I have not used this lens, but I have heard very good things about it.

Thanks. Good to know as I own both the 180mm f2.8 R APO and the 280mm f4. R APO in F mount.

Cheers,

I would try the Nikon 300mm f4 FP.

This lens is extremely sharp and well corrected but also super compact and light.

Nikon is btw rumored to release soon a 600mm f5.6 FP also.

Cheers,
Bernard

As far as I know there is not a gfx -  Nikon af adapter yet. I am sure it will be made soon.
There is a Contax 645 af adapter. Works very well.
Also I have seen that meny re happy with the Canon - gfx af adapter.

Leica R 180f2.8 Apo
Leica R 180f3.4 Apo
Mamiya 645 200f2.8 Apo
Contax 645 210f4*
Contax 645 350f4 Apo
Hasselblad CFE 350f5.6 SA
Contax N 400f4 Apo (EF-converted)

deliver corner-to-corner sharp pics with Fuji GFX (with appropriate 3rd party adapters)
*a bit lower IQ than the others

I didn't test the 180mm f2.8 R APO, just the non-APO version, and the Apo-Telyt. However, I would expect the 180 APO to be great on the GFX.

Agree. But how to control the diaphragm on the 300/4E on the GFX? Carry along a D800?

I use the Canon 200mm f2.8 LII with a Techart adapter on the GFX.
Execellent image quality over the whole image circle of the GFX (which I did not epect).
Relatively lightweight and cheap.

Thanks for everyone's comments.

I was thinking of looking at the Contax 645 210 f4 Sonnar with a Finger Contax 645-GFX smart adapter (or another adapter that supports AF and aperture control).  But this is a fairly heavy combination (I have to carry it with my other kit on my back), so maybe the Contax is a bit on the big and heavy side.

Another option would be a Pentax 645 FA 200mm f4 which is lighter and smaller than the Contax (or the manual focus Pentax 200mm) - but not seen any reports on how this performs with an adapter on a GFX

Don't want to clip on the image circle of the GFX sensor, so feel I need medium format lenses and not a 35mm one.

Hmmm
