Epson SP 9900 - special profiling method
« on: March 09, 2018, 01:14:19 pm »

My Epson SP 9900, not printing over 30% of magenta and over 50% of yellow.
Nozzles are dead. I decided to transfer the yellow to LLK and magenta to LK so that the printer would continue to work.
I have RIP software and I know that is possible such profiling and the printer will continue to print normally.
Does anyone know how to do such profiling? Will any RIP handle this task?
I do not see this option in RIP profilers, but I know it can be done and it works.
I am looking for persons practitioner of similar solutions.

I would reccommend you look into Wasatch SoftRip (Epson Edition). They have a Custom Ink Configuration, which should allow you to remap ink Channels. It  can tell the printer to use the LLK channel as Yellow and use LK as Magenta and run the Printer in CMYK Mode. And thus Profile it as CMYK

There maybe others (ErgoSoft), but this is what comes to mind.

Good job thinking outside of the Box

I have Colorgate and a module in it (CRDM). Theoretically, you can freely control the channels but I do not fully understand the ideas of the solution.
It certainly does not work as they write in the instructions. Disabling the damaged channel also disables the replacement channel.
Hence the question about profiling because this is probably the problem. However, I know that users EFI RIP also work in this way.
I know this RIP and there is no option in it as in Colorgate but this works.

Back in the days when I was using Ergosoft I was able to modify the use of each channels.
But as I remember, Epson has blocked this feature from their pipeline since the 9900 which I wouldn't be able to do it anymore.
Not sure if it still applies to most of the RIP

Thank you Aaron, this is important information. However in Colorgate this function works but not quite as it should.
It uses a replacement channel but also the original one so that the printouts have an excess of this color.
Blocking the operation of the damaged channel also disables the substitute channel. No sense.
I am thinking of a profile that will solve the problem of excess color, but this solution also enforces the use of a damaged channel which will not be needed...
In fact, I am looking for a Color management specialist who will answer the question if it is possible to create a profile that changes the source channels.

That same Colorgate Rip has an "N-Color Profiler" Module; 3-8 Channels. What you are talking about is an N-Color Profile. The Channels nCLR1, nCLR2, nCLR3, nCLR4 can be any Primary Colors you want. The 'Real' challenge is having a Workflow that will use that n-Color Profile. I would look a little closer into Colorgate; the modern version has the 'Channel Redirection Module', that should allow you to choose which color, of a given Print Mode should be printed on Which Print Head. It's been slightly redesigned.

Normally minus two inks? Seems the fix is to fix the actual issue. Do you really want to go down the expensive and sometimes difficult RIP route (I prefer to call them alternative print drivers), and profiling instead of just getting the printer fixed or replaced?

Thank you arobinson, n-color not this option. The right option (module) is CRDM - channel redirecting but requires re-profiling.

Digitaldog, of course. Properly. I have still 8 fully functional channels. I change 9900 to 9890 ;)
