SSL certs are nice, it gives that little green check at the top. Depending on your site, and what you do, SSL may or may not be of use to you. Lots of folks are pushing for it, as it does encrypt traffic between the user and your site, but it's not a make or break for basic sites.
Godaddy is trying to get you to purchase their SSL, which I find to be over priced. I always shop around, as there isn't a difference, just as long as their chain is good. If you want to laugh, Godaddy uses the same backend as a number of other providers, which can be a fraction of the per year cost. Gowebsite.com just pushed theirs up to $40 per year, but have worked fine (same backend as Godaddy).
https://thesslstore.com has lots of different certs from different providers so you can see that it's all over the map. What's funny is they all claim a Warranty anywhere from $10k to $500k , but in over 20 years in IT, I've never heard of anyone getting paid out due to an issue.
