Who using for your SSL certificates?
« on: March 01, 2018, 02:43:54 pm »

Godaddy just called and they said one needs to really get the SSL certificates for your sites that don't have them. Do you all agree..??

And is there a better price our there than Godaddy who you trust and is good?  Thanks

SSL certs are nice, it gives that little green check at the top.  Depending on your site, and what you do, SSL may or may not be of use to you.  Lots of folks are pushing for it, as it does encrypt traffic between the user and your site, but it's not a make or break for basic sites.

Godaddy is trying to get you to purchase their SSL, which I find to be over priced.  I always shop around, as there isn't a difference, just as long as their chain is good.  If you want to laugh, Godaddy uses the same backend as a number of other providers, which can be a fraction of the per year cost.  Gowebsite.com just pushed theirs up to $40 per year, but have worked fine (same backend as Godaddy).  https://thesslstore.com has lots of different certs from different providers so you can see that it's all over the map.  What's funny is they all claim a Warranty anywhere from $10k to $500k , but in over 20 years in IT, I've never heard of anyone getting paid out due to an issue.

Joe, well Godaddy says that soon Google with make the "you are entering an insecure site" box come up...
and now if one click i manually says that...

It's that deal, not to scare off the prospective user?

Is there a company in the $10 a site per year range who is legit/ and will walk one through it easy?

I use Let's Encrypt. It won't work for every site configuration, but it does the job for most. And you can't beat the price.

"WPEngine.com" provides SSL's free of charge. They specialize in Wordpress sites and they do typically charge more for hosting. However, their level of service in my opinion is absolutely excellent.

They are "free" if you have plans with them   probably.

My statement was not as complete as it should have been. Without a doubt you're correct.
