When is the best light in Alaska

Planning my first trip to Alaska, late July. Driving around out of Anchorage for 7 days, followed by the standard cruise to Vancouver.

I'm curious about the light, given 18 to 20 hour days (and more counting twilight). Is the light any different than in the Colorado Rockies, or the Utah deserts? Is there such a thing as golden hour? When is the best time of day? Any bad times?

The angle of the sun is lower, so even mid-day is more favorable. There is a golden hour, and it lasts much longer than at lower latitudes, which is great. The drawback is that length of the day may lead to sleep deprivation if you try to photograph at golden hour. I recommend trying to sleep during the day...

I would recommend you schedule a trip last few days of August into early or mid September for better light, pleasant temperatures, less bugs, less tourists. Really thinking about it I would plan a trip for the third week of September and hopefully fall colors.
