How do you call this? I suspect it's some refraction in the ice particles in the clouds!?

Thank you, couldn't find them with a quicker search.
Very weird and spectacular to see them if you get the chance.

PS. those are panoramas, just because I could (and I only had a telephoto zoom on the camera)

Thank you, this is one shot where the picture doesn't do justice as spectacular is it might be. You get an out of this world feeling, similar to what I experienced a couple of years ago with a Brocken phenomenon (which I encountered since several times and it's not recreating the initial feel anymore).
At least I got this one instead of the northern lights which were missing in action, I only got to see a glimpse from the airplane window above northern Canada.
