Thomas Struth exhibit - what a treat!
« on: January 23, 2018, 10:47:04 am »

I just had the pleasure of seeing a major exhibit of recent photographs of Thomas Struth on "Nature and Politics".

Wow! The impact of 6' high images, made from 8 x 10" color film exposures, printed with "lambda" process - what color, what saturation, and what detail!  All the more interesting for me, because many of the photographs were of the "guts" of physics experiments (nuclear fusion apparati, high voltage apparati, robotics labs, etc), aerospace (Space shuttle, thruster test chamber, infrared telescope, etc), and other high-tech facilities - geek heaven for those of us who don't have access but just read about the experiments. A few "medical" photos were also present - the two operating room photos were to me technically accomplished but hard for me to relate to as "art" (because these are daily scenes for me), but the photograph of a tray of wax medical models, death masks, etc from the Charite hospital, sitting on an old marble morgue table, was very evocative. These wax models were a teaching tool of the 19th and early 20th century - most old medical schools have a few of these sitting around in storage or in old vitrines.

Tokamak (link #1), Hot rolling mill (link #1), Space shuttle (link #2), Seamless tube mill (link #2), Drilling platform in shipyard (link #2) were particularly striking. For architecture and landscape, Vehicle assembly building at Cape Canaveral (link #2) and Ulsan #2 (link #2) had great subtlety of color.

Chemistry cabinet (link #2) was amusing because slightly over life size, familiar (in that most fume hoods are a chaotic-looking jumble), and the glass screen was covered with graffiti jottings from the various users.

I share your love of seeing great prints of images that interest you.

Is it heretical that I would love to see similar prints from Edward Weston's 10x12" images?

Just thinking,
