I once had a nice book of Avedon portraits, but it has disappeared. I could never do his kind of stuff, but he was certainly a powerful master in his field.

In the "Discussing Photographic Styles" section I keep looking for a discussion of the work of one of my personal favorites, a British expat living somewhere in Spain, I believe. His work has a sense of personal freedom that comes, I suspect, from only photographing for himself these days.

If I ever happen to meet him in person, I will be tempted to buy him a bottle of Coke, but only if I have some assurances that doing so won't interfere with his current relationships.

The advantage of photography is that one's personal entanglements can be many and varied, so long as they fall into an elegant and ordered form for several milliseconds...

Eric, Graham:

I think I know the expat to whom you refer, Eric, and yes, he is hard to find. I tried doing it on Wiki, and it would have us believe that he's an actor as well as a photographer! It doesn't even get close to the chap I have in mind: nothing, including those mythical Wild Horses (pace Stones) would get him onto a stage. He told me that once, when he was about fourteen and had no choice in those matters, he was obliged to go forth into the limelight and deliver a poem. Never again! I suspect it was the source of his later heart attacks.

Regarding the brevity of external relationships: I believe that if married, one should never look back, and certainly not forwards, but I haven't read anything about looking sideways. However, Ms Coke is a pretty confident chick, so I don't think she'd be upset were the contents of a distant relative considered, but hey, no way another container would be permitted to grace a particular lens. There are limits to open relationships too, you know!
