Running out of ideas, what does LR/PS do now ?
« on: January 03, 2018, 06:48:09 AM »

Hello everybody,
over 300 of you have read this post, but nobody has replied...
posting it again, since it has stopped my workflow and I need to solve this problem.

here's the original post:

<Hi folks,
very strange behaviour with LR6.13 exporting to CS5 (as always I go to Edit in Cs5, then "render using LR", since it is an Xpro2 file) then it opens in PS and what is 50% view is as big as the 100% in LR, but you can see artifacts in straight lines, quality i.e. sharpness is as if the file would be smaller and zoomed too big. 100% is like 200% in LR.
never had this before, impossible to judge sharpness that way. when closed and saved as tif and looked at in LR, file is as normal.
My first thought was PS opens the file in a different size, since that is what it looks like, but checking shows same pixelsize, same dimensions as original.

run out of ideas what this could be...
please help
cheers
Stephan

I'll be the first in 300 to take a shot at this. Photoshop CS5 is an old version and Lr 6.13 a much more recent one. Perhaps there is an inconsistency some aspect of the rendering between the two that is causing this. I would suggest updating Photoshop and trying again to see whether the problem goes away.

Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences.

Reset Procedure:
1. Close Lightroom.
2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom.
3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
4. Close Lightroom.
5. Restart Lightroom.

Does the behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

Rikk, would it make sense for him to also do likewise with his Photoshop Preferences?

It might if the Lightroom prefs doesn't cover it. The file is normally rendered from Lightroom so that is why I started there.

NO change by changing the LR prefs.
this how it looks like. 100% PS om the left, 100% LR on the right.
Can't update PS, since I'd have to buy CC, which I don't really want. How can this happen after years of flawless integration ?
Could it be PS-CS5 has a problem with my Eizo CG318 Display 31-inch (4096 x 2160) ?

no clue

Have you checked the pixel resolution and linear dimensions for both LR and PS? Did you try trashing and re-instating Ps Prefs yet? I suggest trying both.

The two screenshots you show appear to be of different scaling.  If they were both at what the applications claim to be “100%” then Photoshop seems to be scaling to a greater size on the screen, which may be giving rise to the on-screen pixelation ?

Another thought. I have a venerable version of InDesign (CS4) which does not scale well on my laptop, a MacBook Pro with a ‘Retina’ screen.  The Retina screen is of a much higher resolution than my desktop iMac and so shows pixelation and jaggies on the edges on objects displayed in InDesign CS4.  This seems to be a function of CS4 not scaling correctly for the Retina screen.  It could be the case here, with Photoshop CS5 not able to scale correctly for your high resolution Eizo monitor ?

Scaling, that is most likely the issue here, I looked for this all over but can't find any info about CS5 not scaling properly...
probably just have to accept it, only zoom to 50% and wait for the my long overdue decision to go to CC...
thanks for your thoughts, I will still try to trash the perfs of PS, though.

cheers

Stephan, I think Simon has a point here, why I suggested further up that you examine the pixel dimensions and the linear dimensions of both the Lr and Ps renditions. If there are disconnects that perhaps would be an indicator of the general area of the problem. If there are no disconnects, perhaps check that any settings governing scaling in Photoshop are in their default position. I'd need to look through and refresh my mind to be more specific here - fact is I hardly use Photoshop for either editing or printing any longer unless Lr just can't do what I need.

Mark,
I have now found info that apparently CS5 is not capable of scaling 5k displays, so that's the problem and I'll have to subscribe...
thanks for your help
cheers

Glad to see it resolved Stephan - yes, it happens - old software ceases to support newer technologies. That's progress! It has a good side and some inconveniences!
