Cold weather gloves/mittens... Recommendations please?
« on: January 02, 2018, 02:30:09 pm »

It seems the cold weather is here to stay this winter, in North East United States, at least.  Anyone got recommendations for shooting gloves/mittens to keep working in this? My current ones are complete rubbish!

To get your thoughts headed in the right direction: Mixtures of some of these

Thin shooting gloves (pistol, rifle ) for when the actual moment or moments are close~
Inside warmer mitts for the longer term~
Have a cylindrical muff hung at belt with chemical warming packs easily accessed from either right or left openings~
Riding gloves, cold weather, as in motorcycle, horses~
Extremely important, keep your core warm..it determines how much heated blood is allowed to travel to your extremities...heat on those extremities WITHOUT proper circulation is DANGEROUS~
Hydration, hydration, hydration~
There are all kinds of battery operated vests, gloves and socks, but ONLY AS GOOD AS BATTERIES.
WOOL,WOOL, WOOL... excellent quality in thin layers really works.
NO cotton or denim
Excellent insulation between the bottom of your feet and the ground. Don't fill your boots with water.
Let someone know where you are and plan to be if working alone~
COMMON SENSE.
Know really well all the signs and behaviours of hypothermia BEFORE your brain and dexterity desert you...

I could go on and on as I have spent the most enjoyed parts of my life in cold. Motorcycles, horses, snowshoing, skiing, climbing~ they all have their commonalities and distinct individual demands.

Know honestly your health weaknesses.
Know two ways at the start of your adventure every time to self rescue or obtain help should undesirable surprise befall you.

Cover skin... don't fall into the trap of thinking your face or ears are warm or hot. DO NOT STRIP if you feel on fire...you are in trouble and need serious help fast.

Really and truly go out with good awareness and knowledge between the ears.

Enjoy...These are the unhesitatingly vivid, vibrant moments in life that make requirements of you in return for the feast of passion and life.

Stay safe and healthy so that you may truly LIVE your story! LUMINE!

Beautifully expressed and thorough, obviously based on real experience (on an island floating somewhere between here and the Arctic)!

I had a pair of these (can't find them now). They are kind of gimmicky but for the price are pretty decent.

You need two pair, basically.  When operating the camera, these will work for about 10 minutes:
https://www.backcountry.com/under-armour-core-liner-glove?skid=UND011B-BLA-XS&ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6dW5kZXIgYXJtb3VyIGxpbmVyIGdsb3ZlczoxOjE6dW5kZXIgYXJtb3VyIGxpbmVyIGdsb3Zlcw==
I have a pair in all of my winter parkas.  They are "grippy" and you can use them on touch screens.  Basically keep the wind off
your hands for a short time.

When just walking to spots, you need something warmer, and also waterproof.  Snow will melt on your gloves and wet gloves will make you truly miserable.  Also, waterproof means windproof as well.  I suggest something along these lines:
http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-100-mph-gore-tex-insulated-gloves-for-men

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Mens-Pinnacle-Gloves-with-GORE-TEX-reg/2288507.uts?slotId=0

Thinsulate insulation, waterproof (and windproof) shell.
I doubt it gets much colder than zero F where you are, so you don't need to spend huge dollars here.  I would definitely avoid the "gimmick" gloves though--those that have a "trigger" finger or ones that fold over etc.  They just aren't all that warm.  Maybe if you live in a warm place like Kentucky they're OK.  I also don't like battery heated or chemical heated gloves--I want something that's going to work if I get stuck for two days out in a blizzard.  Also, MAKE SURE the gloves are totally windproof.  No fleecy things!  When you get them, stick your hand in one, put your mouth up against it, and blow hard into the glove.  You should feel zero air movement.  If you do feel moving air, send them back.

I have a pair of "regular" winter hunting gloves similar to the above for when it's just slightly cold (say zero F), but for serious cold like it was yesterday (-31F) I have a pair of Black Diamond Guide gloves.  I've worn them in -42F temps and was fine.  Really doubt you need to spend that kind of money for a pair of gloves though.  Will also mention you could get by with mittens when just walking around.  Mittens are always warmer than the equivalent gloves.  Brands I like are Outdoor Research and Black Diamond.  Black Diamond Guide gloves:

I like to go out in very remote areas at night to take photos of trains, in the coldest weather the Northern Plains can throw at me.  I pay very close attention to clothing; my life depends on it.

Kent in SD

Will also add that if you get much wind, you need a face mask.  Here's the best one I've found:
https://www.backcountry.com/outdoor-research-gorilla-balaclava-mens?s=a
You might get by with something a little less.  Face masks make a huge difference when there's much of a breeze.

I used a milwaukee heated hand warmer (battery heated) this  weekend when it got down to five here along with my gloves...oh was it nice. I had a 3Ah battery in it and it lasted a long time.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M12-12-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-Black-Heated-Hand-Warmer-Kit-2322-21/204401152?cm_mmc=Shopping|THD|google|&mid=sZGuZt7RB|dc_mtid_8903tb925190_pcrid_195274179091_pkw__pmt__product_204401152_slid_&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlZ-1p8262AIVj7rACh0roAasEAQYBCABEgKitPD_BwE

My glove on my right hand is a bit thinner to shoot with so this was great. If my hands got too cold, I popped them in the muff for a bit and they warmed up.

Some of the reviews on Home Depot  are negative but I think people are expecting to carry around a little heater. It doesn't work like that but it is very effective. I had on a milwaukee heated hoodie too under my coat and that was great too. You do need the higher amp batteries.

Happy New Year from Downunder,

Lucky you being downunder! We're having an inordinate cold snap here. Was in Montreal last well and it hit -38 at night.

C or F you wonder? Well, it doesn't really matter, as at -40° they are the exact same. (Really!) In other words, when it gets to -40° Celsius and Fahrenheit agree: get your ass indoors!

Thanks all for the advice. It's most specifically about keeping my digits working for all the... digitisation required these days. Fingerless mitts only work so much, or at least the ones I've tried do. Mittens are warm, but need to be removed...etc. I'm going to try possum wool liner gloves under Austrian wool mitts. I think. Ordered some 2part cycling gloves too, and see which ones to keep.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_warmer

Try these iron-based, air-activated warmers, used by hunters. They can be held with bare skin. They are pretty warm for 2 hours, then start cooling off. Stick them in your mitts - many ski mitts have pockets for them - or if you are wearing gloves, keep the warmers in insulated pockets of your coat or vest, park your hands in those pockets. There are bulky hand muffs for hunters which have internal pockets for hand warmers. IF worse comes to worse you can stick a pair over your socks inside your shoes.

One can also be parked on your (metal bodied or otherwise heat-conductive) time lapse or astrophotography-multiple exposure-taking lens to prevent night fog. I suppose that one could revive cold batteries, if you aren't in the habit of parking camera batteries next to skin.

I consider these to be part of the "10 essentials" kit for winter day-hiking, along with firestarter plus flint, mini-stove, large mug that can be used as a cook-pot, spare socks, extra layer, and reflective-insides bivy (not to mention the other 10 essentials stuff needed in all seasons).

Winter cycling gloves are typically very warm but I still prefer liners and overmitts for versatility and dexterity when taking photos.
