Schneider-Kreuznach 240mm LS f/4.5 IF blue ring vs first version
« on: December 29, 2017, 01:59:27 pm »

I wonder if it is a good idea to buy a used Schneider-Kreuznach 240mm LS f/4.5 IF, first version for my XF camera + IQ 3 100.

- does the blue ring version take advantage from the new autofocus and recompose feature and the old version not?
- does Capture One assign the correct lens profile automatically to the old version (with my old Phase One LS 28 mm this does not work anymore since there ist the new Schneider-Kreuznach version, I heard there is an additional gold pin at the newer lenses)
- does the focus fine trim tool work with the old version?

This can be found on page 57 of the latest manual - v. 1.9 downloadble from the Phase One website.  The 240 is not supported currently for AFr.  The lenses that are supported (the primes from 55 to 150), according to the manual, only the BR lenses are supported.  Optically the non BR and BR are the same design.  Electronically they differ.

... then both versions are not supported by autofocus and recompose tool.
What's your opinion? Better waiting for a new version or save half of the price and buy the old one?

IMHO, it depends on what you use the lens for.  If your photography could benefit from AFr (primarily studio and product photography) and you need a 240 then getting the BR lens would be the way to go and hope that they add this lens to those that they support.  Note that with the last firmware update they added several lenses that were not supported on the initial release of this feature.  If your photography wouldn't benefit from it then getting a good non BR lens would save you a bunch of money (and a bit of weight).

Thank you. With the information that the autofocus to recompose function can be added to the new version with firmware update of the XF my decision is clear to take the blue ring version of the lens.

Just to say I believe they may well add support for non BR versions in later updates. I believe they did that to some other lenses not supported at first. Could be wrong on this though.

I know for sure with the 80mm 'standard' the older D lenses are the sharper ones. The required (re)design of the 80 to fit the LS in there, means it is not as sharp as the older D version. (and a lot heavier!)

The new version of the manual just published about a month ago explicitly says that the function only works with the blue ring prime lenses from 55mm to 150mm.  According to the manual, there are no non-BR lenses supported.  If in fact there are, then the latest version of the manual (v. 1.9) is incorrect.

I can confirm that the non-BR 80mm LS lens is not (yet) supported and generates an error if you try. I would hope that support for non-BR lenses is added at some point but it could be that they want to keep it exclusive to the BR lenses.

The BR and non-BR lenses are all different electronically.  Even the lenses that have the same optical formula are different electronically so it might not be possible.
