Questions about paper

Hello,

Could someone explain why Basis Weight is important when selecting a paper and if there is a relationship between basis weight and thickness?

Thank you.

Ethan Hansen:
If two papers have the same caliper (thickness) but different grammage (basis weights), the heavier paper is more dense. This typically indicates a stiffer, less flexible stock. Depending on the usage for the prints, and whether hand-feel is important, these differences can be important.

Thank you.

The tactile experience is one aspect. Curl from the roll takes more time to cure though with heavy papers, also depending on the density of the paper base.  The heavier papers usually have better properties for the mounting process, whether in lamination or traditional framing.  If done well waves/warping of the sheet will not show in time.

Curl, as mentioned, can be a big issue for some of us.   My P800 has a devil of a time loading  the denser papers that have a hard curl.
