Color Cast Unique to Aperture
« on: December 11, 2017, 02:57:36 pm »

I still use Aperture for a large portion of my catalog.  I just got an Epson P800 printer, and am doing my first test prints.  I have run into an issue with a magenta cast on black and white images only.  The monitor is calibrated, and I had custom profiles made for the papers I use most.

I printed the standard Printer Evaluation Image, and it looks great, including the black and white portions.  When I print one of my own black and white images, there is a magenta cast both on the image that appears in the print dialog box, and on the print itself.  A test print of a color image looked great.  I tried opening the same black and white image in Photoshop, and printing from there, and it was perfect.

The obvious work around is to always print through Photoshop, but I have never had to do that before.  Any ideas?

Check the RGB values of between your image and the color reference image; what's the difference in said values and the color space?
If you copy and paste the B&W part of the color reference image into your image (if asked to convert, do so), does that part of the image print neutral?

Thanks for your reply Andrew.  I measured RGB in a single gray scale block on the reference image:

R  231
G  231
B  231

I then opened the image in the Aperture print dialog, and measured the same block:

R  233
G  227
B  247

The prints appear very close to what appears on the print dialog, and both have a magenta cast.

But now BOTH have the cast? I thought originally the color reference didn't.

Do CMD-I on the reference image and your image.
What Colour profiles are shown?

How are you measuring the RGB values?
Using Aperture, Digital Colour Meter or something else?

Hopefully NOT Digital Color Meter!

The reference image as viewed in Aperture looks fine.  It is only the thumbnail view that appears in the print dialog that has a cast.  And the print so generated has the same cast as the thumbnail.  And yes, I used Digital Color Meter.

Forget the DCM, it's bogus. We can go there if you wish.
I thought we were talking about output from a print being too magenta.
Forget the thumbnail and the display for the time being; let's see why you're getting a magenta cast on the print. I'll repeat:If you copy and paste the B&W part of the color reference image into your image that does NOT print too magenta (if asked to convert, do so), does that part of the image print neutral?

OK, lets see if there is petrol in the tank before dismantling the engine.
More information please.
How did you make your own image?
How did you convert it to Black and White?
What steps did you use to print the reference image and your own image?
Are the files actual JPG or TIF files that you are starting with, or raw CR2 etc?
If jpg/tif then what colour space is shown when you CMD-I?
In Aperture in the INFO tab at the top check the EXIF Data and see if the Profile Name is the same.

The DCM is saying that the reference image is neutral and your image is magenta and that agrees with the problem.
If the image is magenta in the print dialogue then it is before the printing.
