This was taken though a metal fence at 300 mm equivalent from a tripod.

I see it different ways.  One is that his head was in the shade, which it was.  Another is the old saying: "If you see the Buddha on the highway, kill him." And I was on a state highway.

Most likely though, it happened because of my fondness for the shrubbery and the way it made a square of the Buddha's side of the frame.
