nikon D850 a semi-pro body?
« on: November 18, 2017, 07:03:15 am »

I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw in France’s Reponses that they have categorized the 5DmkIV and 5Ds as Pro bodies and the D850 as... semi-pro.....  ;D

The major downside they have found with the D850 is... its slow pace of shooting...

Cheers,
Bernard

Yes, but it would only affect amateurs because pros seldom read those sorts of publications. They tend to look at publications relevant to their work subject(s) just to check out the opposition/competition. Anyway, choices are made on many levels and for differing reasons of suitability.

If amateurs are influenced that way, it's okay, because they will just buy something else next time round. If they are happy blowing money beyond their ability to use the tools to effect, they can put it down to experience and fun.

In the end, all of these companies can make great cameras and lenses; if some go down the tubes, so be it; one will just buy something else. No, it won't lead to higher prices, because folks will either think it too expensive and just use their cellphones or, perhaps, just take up reading...

Ah! The real "pro" camera in the Canon line is my G5X, because it's (almost) always in my pocket when I need a camera.   ;)

I gave up on the 5D series a while ago because they are too heavy to carry around at my age.

Cheers,

Eric

As Keith pointed out recently, it was never fun carting a Hassy 500 any distance. That's what created the entire "assistants" concept. People needed an intelligent mule.

And an automated light stand/reflector holder.  Don't forget those assistant functions.

I have zero issue with the Canon being categorized as pro bodies.

Their answer was that it was a mistake in the table of content page... ;)

They have not been able to explain why 7/9 im/s is seen as a major downside on the D850 while the slower shooting speed on the Canon bodies isn't mentioned as an issue...  ;D

Bernard

I had motor drives for my Nikons. In all those years, I used one as a speed drive once, and realised it was the most stupid way to work. The best function for the things was as a cool film advance mechanism, a winder, one considered shot at a time.

Not a function that would break any deal for me. But then my birds were probably slower and quite willing to repeat an action as often as I asked. That was nice (providing yet another opportunity for wondering about the definitive meaning of nice).

You see how much opportunity LuLa provides for spiritual clarification and understanding?

What i like about the d850 ( compared to the d810)

colour- = cleaner
6400 asa that holds - even 12800 is sometimes good enough ( +1 stop more sensitive compared to the d810)
silent shooting
AF that works in almost darkness
Quiet shuttermodes with EFS- the normal shutter vibration is also reduced compared to the d810
FF 4K video
...
-
what could be improved:
better multiple use of the joystick- ( maybe it is me,  but do not understand its extra)
remote control built-in ( wifi) i understand from the rumorsite a Nikon BT remote is coming... we will see
better implementation of Splitview- is the same as in the d810 and i notice 46MP is getting you to often compromise sharpness across the frame.
...

It's the usual thing, Bernard. Canon has pro marketing people. Nikon has semi-pros.
