Connecting NEC Display to NewiMac Retina
« on: November 17, 2017, 07:26:07 pm »

I have an older NEC MultiSync display with both DVI & sub-D ports. My new iMac has Thunderbolt 3 & USB ports. What would be the best way to connect the two? Thank you for your help.

Rodney,

I see how the adapter connects to the iMac via the USB-C port. But do I need another cable to connect from the adapter's mini DP port to the display's DVI port? Thanks.

I actually ended up ordering a DVI-to-USB-c cable from Amazon. What Andrew had suggested requires both an adapter & a cable. I opted for a single cable from my second display to my iMac. Will report back.

Good luck, I know I had to try a few differing cables for everything to work as desired hence, the suggestion for the one solution that did.
Once hooked up, do play with mirroring and not, and if the time comes you might hook this up to a MacBook, how closing the lid affects the main display. There's some issues out there and I've had problems until I found the cable that worked properly for me.

Thank you, Andrew. I will keep your recommendation in mind if the single cable doesn't work properly.

Andrew,
What cable are you using to connect from the adapter you linked to? I have a NEC 3090 with DVI. Appreciate greatly any help!

Having started this thread, I wanted to report back on connecting my new iMac to an older NEC MultiSync P221W display. I used a Thunderbolt-to-DVI cable which seemed to work fine -- well, sort of. After restrating, the iMac recognized the second display. I then configured System Preferences to use the second display as an extended screen (not mirroring).

However, two issues have surfaced: (1) Whenever I attempt to drag an image in LR from the iMac to the second display, the image won't "snap" into position on the second display. I literally have to rapidly drag the image across the screen in order for it to move it to the second display. This seems to work only after several attempts. (2) When the image is finally displayed on the second display, it will not automatically fill the screen.

Both of these issues never occurred when the second display was connected to my old MacBook Pro. Hopefully someone can offer a suggested remedy. Thank you so much.

And my update:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017TZTMBG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pldnSite=1

(same as what Andrew Rodney linked to in previous post here).

plus the Apple Mini display port to Dual Link DVI adapter has worked flawlessly.

Did also need USB-C to USB-A adapter for the Dual Link DVI adapter USB connection.

Not inexpensive, but I have full use of my 3090 now with MBP 15" Touchpad
