Sony makes Medium Format Sensor roadmap official on website
« on: November 11, 2017, 06:30:20 pm »

https://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/products_en/IS/sensor2/application/index.html

150mp full frame and 100mp cropped frame with BSI in 2018...  Frame rate capability is doubled, 4K (12 bit) video is added.  No word on OSPDAF.

We all knew of the upcoming sensors from previous reporting but now it's officially on their website...

I'm curious (hoping)  BSI will help a little with tech lenses.

Hi,

That may be the case. But, I would expect minor improvements.

Those sensors are probably developed with mirrorless in mind and mirror less cameras have short flange distances that may encourage large beam angles. So I guess the design may be beneficial for technical camera users, too. But those pixels will be small.

Best regards
Erik

Oops, sorry - I did not notice that another thread on this topic had already been started.  My bad!

I'd take a minor improvement.  The Rodenstock 28mm is barely usable right now for me.  Even a slight improvement would be helpful.

Hi Wayne,

Point taken!

We have to wait and see, don't we? When the A7r was replaced with the A7rII, that had BSI, some improvement was noted as far as I know, but I don't think that BSI was a solution to all problems.

Technical cameras are mirrorless systems. Will the next generation sensors be made for mirrorless or mirrorful?

The way I see it, mirrorless is the future. The function of the mirror is to yield "what you see is what you get" viewing. Live view solves the WYSIWYG issue, so mirror is not needed. It is quite obvious that mirrorless is where the future is, but that future may not be here and now.

Best regards
Erik
