A little OT: Frames?
« on: November 10, 2017, 05:59:31 pm »

Now that I have a printer again, I'm going to need to frame some of these prints.

Do any of you have a pre-made frame you like enough to display your work in? I've seen some pretty bad ones and some that seemed at least decent.
We have a frame shop here but they are pretty expensive. Good for a print or two here and there but it would be cost prohibitive to incorporate in my usual workflow.
I'm looking for something reasonably priced but not cheap looking/feeling that I can order online.
I'd need 8x10, 11x14, 14x18, and 16x20.

Am I hoping for too much?

Another vote for Frame Destination.  You can get kits that make things very easy.

Yes Frame Destination has the best prices.

Personally I make my own out of quarter sawn white oak.  But these are prints on canvas, no glass, plexiglass or mat

Go and talk to your local frame shop.
My local shop was also expensive- until I went and talked to him.
I showed him my work, and he understands that at least in art, I am a struggling artist.
I promised him at least 25 frames a year- most are framing 20x30" prints- my normal size.
He is a joy to work with.  I try to give him plenty of time, but he will meet a deadline when I need it.
He is now significantly cheaper than the mail order frames I had used in the past.

My source for a time was the local thrift stores.
I would look for frames with glass then spray them with satin black paint.

IKEA

Closest one is 200 Miles away which is kind of a deal breaker.

I use American Frame, online.  More expensive than the prefabs, but substantially less than retail frame shops.  They cut and send parts: 4 frame members, mats, backing, acrylic.  They don't ship glass, only acrylic.  Custom dimensions, huuuuge selection of frames and mats.  It takes me 8 minutes to assemble and frame, though I've done over 100.   www.americanframe.com

Online.

I'll check it out, thanks. For some reason I thought they were a physical store only.

Generally framedestination.com has better pricing than American Frame though they don't have as many choices

Michael's has decent frames at a decent price. Just examine them carefully because a significant % or them have flaws.

IKEA does have some nice frames, also some total cheap %^&$, so it's probably better to look at it :)

One of my wife's colleagues is retired and makes frames as a hobby. He's done a couple for us and they look nice -- and fairly priced. I'll need to get him to frame a few more. But he's local-only, not mail order, so no help to you.

True. The one I used was, I believe, named RIBBA and had real glass and nice depth to the frame. I hear that IKEA might have changed it to plastic instead of glass for certain sizes, so, yes, best to see it first. Than again, it is about $10 for 16X20," so not a huge risk to order it online and test it.

The last Ikea frame I bought was made of of something that looked like compressed Styrofoam and broke the moment I removed the wrapping. I'll stick with Michael's for budget frames.

Actually I don't use frames anymore--got tired of the weight--and switched to canvas which is much lighter and you can actually see the picture without reflections from the glass getting in the way.
