A look at the i1Studio
« on: November 09, 2017, 11:38:59 am »

I've written up quite a long look at the i1Studio

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/i1studio-calibration-profiling-review/

Not at all bad profiles, but the inability to save any measurement data (of any kind) made it somewhat irksome (IMHO) to use if you are used to a more flexible workflow.

The i1Studio is pretty much the same physical device as I reviewed several years ago under the ColorMunki name.

Can you define "pretty much"?
Otherwise, the only thing new is the software?

Might wish to mention there's no way not to build V4 profiles (bad).

The circuitry that communicates between device and computer is different - this is (apparently) why a colormunki will work with CM photo and i1Studio software, but the i1Studio is not recognised by the ColorMunki Photo software.  From a measurement POV the measurement side is the same between a recent ColorMunki and the i1Studio device (which is physically similar to the ColorMunki Design unit)

And this is a problem in what tangible way to someone printing with an i1Studio profile?

This may be one of those points that if you know and understand, you should take as a hint that you are not in the i1Studio target market ;-)

Only products that barf on such profiles. They shouldn't, but it has happened multiple times in the past, including with Lightroom! And since the V4 provides nothing new or useful, and since legacy products did have the switch for such an option, I find this a major step backwards and think it should be mentioned to those considering such a product.

I'd also mention that IF you have an older ColorMunki as I do, and you think it makes better profiles than the original (no comment, I use something better), it's worth nothing the older hardware works on the newer software and that yeah, the only thing new in this product IS that software. Oh, and the name.  :P

That is a valid point - do you know of any current products that have this issue?

I just don't build V4 profiles for anyone because there's no upside and potential downsides. Why not ask X-rite why they will not offer the choice and why they don't support the PRMG in their V4 profiles. That would make some interesting reading on this new product IMHO.  ;D

The i1Studio has a different USB VID & PID. They switched from the old Gretag one (ColorMunki) to the X-Rite range. The instrument is similar enough to work with old software in every other way.

Ok, I guess we have confirmed that it's otherwise the same hardware as the Munki Photo/Design.  From the article:

X-Rite tell me that the only changes between the most recent ColorMunki device and the i1Studio are in the case design.

Meaning the only thing new is the software which is in some ways a step back from the previous. Great.
And now, X-rite will put some love into i1Profiler?
