Print profiles don't stick (?)
« on: October 22, 2017, 08:50:37 pm »

Photoshop CC 2017.1.1, Mac.

Using COSTCO profiles from Dry Creek Photo for 3 different sized prints (children's theatre poster).

I noticed this in the past. I apply a satin profile to the poster images and the glossy profile to the 8x10, saving each when I'm done. Depending on whatever profile I last used, all the images have that profile attached (View>Proof Setup).

Why doesn't the chosen profile stick to the saved image??

So I ended up applying the profiles one at at time, saving and uploading each image before moving to the next and repeating. That works, but it shouldn't be this hard.

The procedure is to Edit->Convert to Profile, then select the appropriate Costco profile and rendering intent.

View->Proof only shows what the image looks like if printed using the selected profile. But it's redundant once you have converted to the printer's device space. The assumption is that you will use the same printer/profile for subsequent images which is why it stays selected. That's the most common situation.

You would use view->proof before converting the image to the printer's RGB space to see what rendering intent looks best for your purpose.

Very good Doug, thanks!

IIRC (from last time I read Dry Creek's profile instructions) they just said to do what I did.

To be safe, I followed your directions and will re-upload them.

Drycreek does a very good job of tracking Costco printers/paper and providing current profiles for them. Their instructions go through setting up a color managed system and how to use their downloaded profiles to see what a print would look like (the soft proof discussion) but after you have chosen a rendering intent and possibly edited the photo to improve contrast or printer gamut limitations then the Edit->Convert to Profile is selected (Step 16) to render the image in the printer device's native RGB space.

It's also important to follow the specific instructions for printing that tell Costco you want color management turned off. This can vary with Costco's and their printers so carefully review the instructions that apply to your Costco.  I would recommend a single print before submitting a large number if you have the time.

Thanks again, even missing your step I've been successful for the last few years up to now (theatre posters, including one for the current opening night).

I do uncheck Auto Correct so I'm good there.

Amazed at Costco print quality and price.

Why doesn't the chosen profile stick to the saved image??
Because that would be an awful design decision! Doug explained the proper process here; Convert to Profile. After soft proofing to even select the rendering intent.

Thanks Andrew. Except for this type of occasional project I don't do prints (web only).

So either I didn't originally completely read the Dry Creek instructions or they have been modified since I last did, but Doug was very helpful.
