This is an incredible lens! Over 500 pounds - lol. And it is designed for 2 1/4 format.

I would say it wouldn't be far of $100.000 USD

That would just be for the lens cap.

The 'standard' Canon 1200F5.6 is well over 50K itself and this must be a custom built lens.  I'd guess at about 200K.

It looks wierd - no tripod mount, just two lugs on the side. Maybe there is a gimbal frame for it. How does one carry a 250kg lens to the places where wildlife usually hangs out?

If this was April 1st I'd be suspicious...

Wonder if it's got an adapter for the 4/3 system?

And.... what a waste of money.  how ridiculous can a company get anyway. they ought to make a couple of tilt shift lenses instead.  eleanor

It is of enormous PR value to proof what an optical company cpable of delivery, under someone's commission.  Not to mention the technical know how accumulate from bringing out such lens possible and will be contributing to related development.  It is likelyto cost a few million USD and there are a lot of people in the world have such money to pay for something to impress others in addition to what such lens is capable of delivering.
I think this may open a new channel for those who wants something extremely good and expensive and they will learn that after all, a company such as Zeiss, can custom something to meet thier desire.

Looking at the picture, it took a few seconds for me to realise that the small black "blob on the right" is in fact the 200 serries camera attached! It puts the scale in perspective.

You might be able to get it at a bargain price... after all who would want it ?

Now the 500MM F4.8 effective:

This really is one of the best lenses ever made! I think about 200 exist and there must be 200 very proud owners somewhere!

It's probably not a company that ordered it. The right side of the lens has arabic characters (bottom image). This lens was probably commissioned by some oil-rich sheikh.

I would guess the owner has a custom gimbal mount in a converted 4x4. That way he can go on safari with his chauffeur driving him round.

Rumours are that it is a rich Arab who ordered it.
