40,000 penguin chicks starved to death in Antarctica
« on: October 15, 2017, 08:29:50 pm »

Only two Adélie penguin chicks out of a colony of 40,000 in Antarctica survived what researchers are calling a "catastrophic breeding event."

Why are the blaming warming?  It seems there is more sea ice.

Apparently, those chicks, as well as their parents don't like ice.

There seems to be also conflicting news when it comes to penguin counts. Another article published by National Geographic earlier this year indicates that there are 6 million Adelie Penguins - 2 million more than thought previously.

It’s called reasoning from a conclusion.  Not that uncommon in many fields of inquiry.

It seems there is more sea ice.

More sea ice means less larger icebergs because the bars are broken down faster which means less open water which is what Adélie penguins need for finding food...

Simply, more sea ice bad for Adélie penguins...as the article states.

Indirect consequences of warming, although the exact dynamics are not fully understood yet.
This article offers a bit more detail:
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/oct/12/penguin-catastrophe-leads-to-demands-for-protection-in-east-antarctica

But to better understand, one would need to read the scientific studies on the phenomenon.

In-depth discussions about climate change are not tolerated on this forum, so don't harras Chris by dragging this into a political exchange of ideas. He has more useful things to do.

Cheers,
