Sunspot on Aspens, Dallas Divide.
« on: October 10, 2017, 12:42:10 pm »

STILL getting used to living w/out live-view exposure preview w/Nikon, but steadily getting the hang of it. Just for fun, on the Dallas Divide, I put my wife's Nikon 200-500 on a D7200 and *boom*: lots of faraway things got quite close.  First time in CO for fall color, and I'll never be satisfied with the Eastern Sierra again.  We were there last Wed/Thu/Fri and on Thursday the conditions were incredible.

One that that REALLY stuck out to me this trip was my lack of reach. Shooting 7-8 years w/M43, that was never an issue, and found myself shooting overwhelmingly between the FF equiv of 50-150mm. Having to 'borrow' my wife's primary lens (Sigma 70-200 2.8 ) all the time gets old, fast. I missed a lot of opportunities because I was ill-equipped.

As much of a PITA Nikon is to shoot with, though, there is SO much more headroom in the files and nothing I've ever experienced sharpens up like an NEF file.  With the NIK tools, very little is needed, but what is done is just magic.

That image is indeed magical.

You have yourself a keeper.  I especially like the background.

+1. Now I'm rethinking my drive today up to the crest of the Sierra to check my groves! Nicely done!

Ha!  Don't get me wrong, I'll always love Bishop Creek (both north and south forks), McGee Canyon, Lundy, Lee Vining, Sagehen and all the rest (even radically overvisited North Lake), but they just don't add up.  Totally different look.

The real shame is the damage done over the years to the trees around Surveyor's Meadow and other classic places.  SO many downed trees.
