P-800 end of paper print issue (paper is moving?)
« on: October 08, 2017, 05:38:55 pm »

Has anyone come across this? Any suggestions on fixing?

I am using ImagePrint and Moab Entrada Bright (190), fed through the ASF.

My Epson 3880 does that if the paper is not flat.

I never had that problem with my 3800 or the 4900 (which had a vacuum to help, so bad example), so I don't have much experience with papers that are not "flat".

I tried printing from Photoshop, and the same thing happens.  I can see the paper suddenly "jump" sideways at the end, as if something (the head?) is hitting it. The paper looks flat going in, but maybe I should bend the back corner a little bit and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I seldom use the ASF but I use cut rolls in the 3880 and always make the paper about 30mm longer than the print each end. No feed problems then.

Good idea, Bob.  Thanks.

For the archives, should anyone in the future be searching, here is a post from Moab about paper curl on cut sheets:

Thanks for the link. It seems that my mistake is to throw away the fiddly plastic bags that the paper is supplied in. I like to keep the stack of sheets bare in the box, but this will expose the paper to humidity which will gradually cause the paper to curl.

Thanks for the Moab link. That is a very good discussion of the problem and cures.

The only paper that seems to be resistant to this problem is Museo Portfolio Rag which I have often used (13x19 on an Epson 3880).  It seems to be resistant to curl.  Some alpha cellulose PK papers such as Ilford Gold Fiber also are pretty straight and I've not had issues with those (I think they have a polyethylene coating that is moisture resistant.  All the Hahnemule matte papers (Bamboo, Photo Rag Ultra Smooth, and William Turner) suffer from this and I usually reverse curl the papers over a paper tube very gently to straighten.  Sometimes one has to take special care to bend the end corners.

Thanks for the Moab link; I had not seen that before.

I've been printing almost exclusively on the Canson or the Ilford Baryta papers and have NEVER had a problem with curl, which is why (I guess) when I tried the Entrada I was stumped as to why I was having this issue.  I haven't solved it yet, mind you, but at least I am now looking in the right direction for a solution (currently flattening the paper under weight).
