How to glue to the back of acrylic
« on: October 05, 2017, 11:04:33 pm »

I typically make a french cleat with two posts  glued with an acrylic cement to the back of Facemount acrylic.

Is there any way to securely a wood or aluminum 1" thick frame on the back for hanging on a cleat?

This silicone adhesive comparison might be of interest:

I've also heard of using construction adhesive.

we do a large number of Aluminum and acrylic face mounts.

A face mount should always have a protective layer behind the photograph, we use 2mm Sintra or 2mm - 4mm black plexiglass.

We used to glue the cleat with a 2 part epoxy acrylic cement.  We switched to this 3m tape a year ago, and find it a great solution.  After 24 hours, you can rip the cleat off by ripping apart the foam middle, but it takes some serious work and effort.  In the case of aluminum it can’t be removed without bending the aluminum.  It’s extremely aggressive foam tape.  We’ve delivered several hundred pieces using this tape with no problems reported.

Much easier to use than any glue. Also pretty much instant, no need to dry or harden.

Note they have several types of tape.  4496 was the one recommended by 3m for it’s aggressiveness for our application.

Just like Wayne we have tried everything and have also settled on foam tape. 3M red VHB tape is really good stuff but also expensive.
We probably use a little more of Tesa ACX plus. Comes in all sizes. We use the wide 3" for our standout gator mounts for dye sub metal and the 1" for the narrow standout wood frames.
Clean, neat and the best part is no waiting for any adhesive to dry.

I agree with Wayne that nothing should be attached directly to the print in the case of a facemount. The print should be sandwiched by another sheet of material on the back -- whether Sintra, acrylic, aluminum composite panel, etc.

By preference, we do full subframes out of metal frame moulding, for hanging panels like this. The attachment method we've adopted is 3M VHB tape.

You are right they have quite a few.
I lucked out with the Tesa as the salesman gave me a dozen free rolls and I still have some left 5 years later.

Tesa ACX plus 7063 rubber 2 sided adhesive
Tesa 62508 foam 2 sided adhesive.
Tesa 61010 1"& 3" 2 sided adhesive with no foam or rubber backer, really good stuff.
