Sunday morning
« on: October 02, 2017, 12:16:26 pm »

I always ask my son if he wants to join me on shoots and usually the answer is "no thanks" but every now and then I get a lucky break and he goes for it. Amazingly he decided to join me for a sunrise outing yesterday which is quite a feat for a 14 year old. I recently got him a "new" vintage lens to play with and I think that has rekindled his interest in photography. Yay! :)
We drove out to a spot we occasionally camp at and more often just come for the view and some photos. This is looking toward town from our nearby recreation area, Hartman Rocks.

This one was a little precarious to shoot. No easy angles to get this great tree and that backdrop. I was perched over a cliff to my right, hanging on to lichen-covered boulders to stay put, tripod balanced on little ledges a good rock climber might struggle with. Somehow managed not to drop anything or fall. This is (obviously) a HDR and I think I may tone it down a bit on a future edit. A little more contrast would probably make it look more real.

This is the main view and obvious shot from that spot. I was happy we got some fog but not too much.

Finally, on the way back home I spotted this alignment and light happening. Had to make one more stop and wait a little for the light to come back and get this one. I really like photos that show transition, either from one climate zone to another (high desert to alpine here) or seasons as we see fall slipping away to winter. I was glad we stopped.

Very nice. The hdr looks fine to me.

Very nice!  I would hand these on my wall in my home.
Sometimes my "kids" (19 and 21 and both smarter than me) accompany me on my shoots here in northern Colorado.  They go off hiking or scrambling on the nearby rocks.  My daughter is an artist and spends many hours drawing things.  I plop my camera down and spend a few seconds or minutes capturing an image.  She is more of an artist.

#3 is my favourite, because the composition is "cleaner".

#1 is just too busy, too much going on. But I understand that it is not an easy one:)

They're all fine, Matt, and I particularly like #1. I remember a trip to the Black Canyon where I was trying to get this kind of shot from a ledge and nearly scared myself to death. Stay safe my friend. Don't get too close to the edge.

All great especially #1. Are you allowed to produce HDR shots that don't look grungy? ;-) Ken

Great photos! Maybe Paulo is right about the first being to busy, view and tree are both very strong. You might be right with a less HDRish processing. (But I'm right in my HDR-allergic phase, so don't give much on it.)

You're very lucky to have such a landscape nearby ... envy.
