New Canon DO Lenses
« on: September 10, 2006, 06:16:49 am »

A few years ago a Canon web site in Europe posted an article that stated some new DO lenses were in development, including a 200-400 4.0 IS DO. The article was then quickly pulled and all went silent.

Has anyone heard anything more about these lenses?

I've just returned from a safari in South Africa and the current restrictions for UK carry-on flight luggage (45cm x 35cm x 16cm) meant I decided to leave my big lenses behind and settled for the 70-300 IS DO. I don't see these restrictions going away anytime soon so a 200-400 4.0 IS DO would be a perfect travel lens.

I've wondered about that too and it got me thinking, was the 70-300 a practice run for a DO zoom?  However, given the price of the 400 DO f/4, what would you be prepared to pay for the 200-400 f/4 version    Then, imagine a 200 f/2 to 400 f/4 zoom with the big front 100mm DO elements supporting both.  That would be a fantastic lens and fantastic price.  Perhaps they'd drop the price of the 400 when they released the zoom?

But in answer to your question, no, I've not heard any more

There was also talk of a 500mm F2.8 DO in the same release.... I think there is a link somewhere to the original release on LL website somewhere - cant remember where though.

Im about to order the 400mm F4 DO - but just waiting for Photokina just in case there are any announcements. So far... havent heard anything though.
