Trouble transferring GFX 50s raw files to 2011 17" MBP
« on: September 16, 2017, 02:03:38 am »

I am having the weirdest problem.

I rented a Fuji MF for a trip and got it a few days before heading out to test it out. Everything seemed to be fine until I wanted to transfer the images to the computer...

I am using two 64GB SanDisk ExtremePro SDXC cards. One for Raw and one for jpegs. Obviously formatted the cards first (same type/brand/size memory card in both slots)

Every time I try to transfer the raw files from the memory card to the mac it will begin to transfer, then eject the card, give a finder error -36 and remount the card, or say it isn't readable and needs to be initialized. Then when I insert the card back into the camera it says the card is not initialized. I tried to use disk drill to recover the data from an outing this morning and it does the same thing. It sees all the files, but will eject the card after a few seconds of trying to transfer the raw files to the mac. Transferring the jpegs worked just fine.

I tried a few other smaller SDHC cards and they are hit and miss. Sometimes the raw files will transfer just fine and other times I get the same error with the file not able to copy.

This is the error:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “_DSF4077.RAF” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)

When I try to transfer one file at a time it SEEMs to work, but will fail when trying to copy 2 or more files at a time. Then, sometimes, I will be able to manually transfer 2-3 files one at a time before I get the error and the disk ejects.

Any thoughts? I am leaving santa fe tomorrow and headed to monument valley and south eastern utah and would hate to not be able to photograph or not access the photographs I do make

I think I solved this... I tried several things in disk utility to erase and repartition the card as exfat. Sandisk says this isn't needed, but it did seem to solve the problem (knock on wood)

FWIW, I had no problem with transfers of the GFX50S files to either my Mac Pro, with a card reader, or my mid 2014 MacBook Pro. I used Sandisk 64GB Extreme Pro cards formatted in the camera.

Really what I want to know is what you think of the camera. I also rented one recently (I am a Fuji X T-2 user) and had a blast using it but concluded it was not for me, too big, too expensive, and too big files. Enjoy your time with the GFX, I certainly did.

i have no problems either with GFX files and in my personal experience sandisk are the most reliable cards....
i always, always, always and only format my cards in the camera i shoot with at the beginning of the session/shoot....in camera only....
also: i have a 2011 macbook pro (updated with ssd) that i never use anymore and tried to do some stuff on it....i honestly don't think i would even try to use it for anything related to GFX files....things just get frustrating....

Are you sure your card reader supports SD-XC cards.  Depending on the age of your computer (if using a built-in reader) or card reader, it may not support XC cards.

The weird thing about the card reader and card is that the one with jpegs works perfectly with the same card and no funny partitioning stuff. As for the computer, I am using a 2011 17" quad core and with upgraded ram and ssd just to view things while on the road, I'll do real work on a Mac Pro at home, but the one full size 16-bit tiff export I did only took about 30 seconds on the laptop. This is the first medium format digital I've used and it fits me pretty well. The one test file that worked with is so buttery and smooth. I'm off to Canyon De Chelly, monument valley and southeastern Utah now so we'll see how it does when I slow down a bit and do some real work.

If you are using the 2011's internal card reader, it does not support SD-XC cards.  The reason it works with the JPEGs is because you aren't filling the card past the capacity of the older SD-HC standard.  Once you get past that storage capacity which you will with RAW files very quickly but not with JPG, it sees a partitioning problem since there is data stored beyond the 32GB point.  Get a cheap SD-XC card reader and your problem will likely be gone.
