Lightroom updated
« on: August 31, 2017, 11:50:16 am »

I realise I posted a related question under the Camera Raw Q & A, so my apologies for any duplication.

I've just updated my standalone Lightroom to 6.12. Now, of course, when I try to open files in standalone CS6 I get the suggestions to 'render using Lightroom' or 'open anyway' as Camera Raw in CS6 can't be updated beyond 9.1.1, while Lightroom uses version 9.12. This means either that CS6 won't recognise all the changes made in Lightroom (notably perspective changes), or that the file opens very slowly while Lightroom renders it, and I then end up with an (often) superfluous TIFF next to the dng in my catalogue. Is there any way around this, or do I unwillingly have to pay up to Adobe for the rest of my days?

You can upgrade PS CS6 to the Creative Cloud version
or
You can allow Lightroom to do the render.

Thanks - that's clear. Does a subscription involve new downloads of LR and Photoshop, or does it just amend my existing standalone versions? And if at some point my subscription ceases, presumably LR and Photoshop just revert to my originals? One final question - are there any issues with buying an annual subscription from Amazon (seems to be a little cheaper) rather than a monthly sub from Adobe?

Thanks,
Alex

Your 6.12 would be the same program as the subscription version, so no new download. When you restart LR, it should see you are signed in and enable the subscription-only features/branding. Photoshop CC is obviously a new program from CS6, and you would have both programs installed.

If you end a subscription, Photoshop CC will stop working but Lightroom should be OK. If you want to revert to your standalone version, it might be necessary to re-enter the serial number - see this note.

Someone else will have to answer the Amazon question - I've no idea.

Thank you, John. An Amazon purchase does sound potentially troublesome, anecdotally. One thing I didn't quite understand - if I stop subscribing to Lightroom CC, does it revert to my standalone 6.12 or (having updated from time to time) does it carry on working but without any further updates (i.e. retaining the ones it has acquired)?

My understanding is that it should revert back to 6.n, which you have a licence for and have the option to update to 6.13, 6.15, 6.23 or however far version 6 gets to.
If there's an upgrade to a perpetual version 7 you would have to buy an upgrade for your licence from 6 to 7.
