Delkin PicturePad hard drive formatting
« on: September 01, 2006, 11:32:38 pm »

I have a Delkin PicturePad 60GB and accidentally formatted (using Windows XP) its hard drive as an NTFS file system. It should be a FAT32 formatted drive. Now Windows won't give me the option to reformat it as FAT32.

The drive works fine as NTFS, but the PicturePad does not list any files that are on the drive, and it reports the drive as being empty and with 1.2GB free, when in fact I do have files on it and Windows Explorer does correctly list the files and reports the full 60GB capacity of the drive.

Any ideas on how I can reformat the Delkin drive as FAT32 so that it (the Delkin) will recognize its full 60GB capacity and show files in its file list?

Thanks,
Scott

In the Boot Camp thread, Andrew Larkin sheds some light on your issue.

There is no difference between the OEM version and the retail version of XP, other than the licencing conditions.  The OEM version can only legally be sold with a brand-new computer as a "bundle".

On the subject of 32Gb partitions and FAT32: it is not a technical limitation of FAT32, but a policy issue of Microsoft.  You can format a much larger drive to use FAT32, it is just that the Microsoft utilities in XP won't let you.

Once a big drive has been formatted, XP will deal with it quite happily.

The trick used to be that we booted a system from an old Windows 98 boot diskette and formatted the drive from there.  W98 supported FAT32 but not NTFS.

Last time I had to do this (to prep a notebook hard disk for a USB storage device), I grabbed a free tool from [a href=\"http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm]http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm[/url]

Alternatively, if you can format the drive as FAT32 from the Mac OS, then install XP under whatever dual-boot arrangements.

Thanks for the tip! The fat32format.exe program worked perfectly on the Delkin PicturePad. All's back to normal now.
