Photos opening too large after resizing
« on: August 30, 2006, 07:42:54 pm »

I seem to be having trouble preventing photos from opening to full size online. I shoot at Large Fine (or 3504x2686 pixels), then go to PS7 to reduce down from roughly 48"Width x 37" Height down to say 4.5" x 3.5". I do this by increasing resolution from the standard 72ppi up to in this case 777 ppi. They look smaller than that online & in addition they open 2-3 x's the size of my 17" monitor when viewing.

If I Resample I lose data, pixels & quality. I'd rather not.

The camera is a Canon 30D, the software is PS7 & the website is run by Google, which may perhaps be part of the problem.

Can anyone explain the standard manner in which one prevents a thumbnail from reconverting back to full image size?

Thanks
Rich

The answer is simple, you resample.

The explanation is simple too. Monitors are not variable PPI devices but printers are. Monitors ignore the PPI setting of an image file because they have no other choice; OTOH, printer drivers do try to respect your ppi wishes. (Perhaps we should change the acronym to PPPI - pixels per printed inch. ;)

Yes, downsampling is destructive; so of course you only do it to a copy of your original. It leaves the copy not only smaller but softer, so unsharp masking (USM) is typically needed. When doing USM, try a very small radius - around 0.3 pixels for example - and a moderate amount value as a starting point.

If resampling is the preffered manner (of a copy) I see this won't be a problem, now let's take it up a notch: Let's say I want the viewer to click & enlarge the thumbnail, but not to a printable size, maybe 3x4" or 4x5". Is this done with software other than  PS7? And if so what is it?

Thanks

The normal practice for web galleries and such is to create (at least) two image files, one sized (resampled) for the thumbnail and one sized for individual viewing. However, if bandwidth/page-loading-time is not a factor it is possible to override the display size via the height/width parameters of the img tag and use the larger image file for thumbnail display also.

Don, Dale, Sheldon,

Assuming bandwidth/upload time is a factor would this be accomplished with PS? If not then what? Initially since I have only done this in practice at a site where I am not yet selling, but practicing, & I don't want to worry in the future about images getting used without license, (other than watermarks) how could I then prevent these uploaded images from opening & getting saved or printed? Or is this a factor I cannot control using only PS?

I do have a photo site I will eventually belong to but I want to have this down pat by the time I sign on. Then too I'll want to sell on my own site. So if I need software other than PS then I'll just have to get it.

BTW Don if your override principle would do this I'd be happy to learn it.

Thanks Guys

What exactly is your goal here?  If you're just looking to make a gallery there is available software that does this.  Jalbum being the simplest to deal with since it doesn't require anything on the server.

Photoshop can make a gallery, too.

But this is an HTML thing.  You have to make your web site display your images the way you want.  You can make appropriate sized images with photoshop but you need to make the web page use them.
