Legacy Lenses for Fuji GFX 50
« on: August 19, 2017, 04:57:16 pm »

I am speculating on using some other than GF lenses on the GFX 50.  I know I will need an adapter but I have been reading about the Minolta Rokkor MC/MD lenses mainly from 35mm 100mm that is recommended. Are there others out there like Pentax 645 Lenses or Leica R or ..... That will give Excellent IQ ?
I shoot mainly portraits and some social functions but NOW I am Semi retired from  shooting so it will be for my personal use mainly.  I don't need to use F1.2 or F2.0
   I shoot 2.8 and higher ( 5.6-8 or even f 11)   Thank you Dennis

I can't speak to any of the lenses you mentioned but I quickly found none of my Nikon lenses were worth trying since they all vignette and showed quite a bit of sharpness fall off. The only Nikon lens I found suitable was my 14-24 which did well. All the rest of the Nikon glass had too small an image circle for the GFX. Nikon lenses with the latest electronic aperture like the 200-500 or newest 70-200 can't be adapted since you stay wide open.

Other MF Lenses will do much better if you can find an adapter.

I use my 105 1.8 ais nikkor on the gfx. Works wonderfully for portraits.

The Zeiss 135/2 Apo-Sonnar does well: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/zeiss-1352-apo-sonnar-on-gfx/

The CO/Jenoptik 60/4 does well at macro distances: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/coastal-604-uv-vis-ir-on-fuji-gfx-50s/

The Sigma ART 50/1.4 is quite good if you stop down a bit: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/sigma-art-501-4-on-fujifilm-gfx-50s/

The Zeiss 35/2 ZF will do for a lot of uses: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/zeiss-352-zf-2-on-fujifilm-gfx-50s/

The Leica 280/4 Apo R does well: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/leica-2804-apo-r-on-fujifilm-gfx-50s/

The Leica 135/3.4 Apo M does well but doesn't cover the whole format:http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/leica-1353-4-apo-telyt-m-on-fuji-gfx-50s/

I wouldn't recommend the Sigma 24/1.4 ART: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/sigma-art-241-4-on-fujifilm-gfx-50s/

The Leica 90/2 Apo M does well where it covers: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/leica-902-summicron-m-asph-on-fuji-gfx-50s/

The Leica 180/2.8 non-Apo R and the 180/3.4 Apo R both do well: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/two-leica-r-mount-180s-on-fujifilm-gfx-50s/

The WATE doesn't cover, and I wouldn't recommend it, if for no other reason that the native 23/4 is so darned good: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/leica-wate-on-fujifilm-gfx-50s-16-21-mm/

In general, the Fuji/Hassy HC lenses have a hard time keeping up with the 5.3 um GFX pitch.

Hello,
Has somebody experience with Hasselblad Xpan lenses? Their image circle should be ok for gfx!?!?

1. The Xpan wide angle lenses are symmetrical designs, therefore it is rather unlikely that they work well with a large sensor.
2. For the same reason the back element of the lens is rather near to the sensor. They might interfere with the protection glass of the GFX.

my findings & thoughts: 3rd party lenses with GFX

w/ Steel AF-adapter Canon EF - Fuji GF
Canon EF 17f4 L TSE
Canon EF 24f3.5 L II TSE
Canon EF 50f2.8 L TSE Macro
Canon EF 90f2.8 L TSE Macro
Canon EF 135f4 L TSE Macro
Canon EF 100f2.8 Macro L
Sigma 35f1.4 Art
Sigma 50f1.4 Art
Sigma 85f1.4 Art
Sigma 135f1.8 Art
Zeiss Otus 55f1.4 Apo Distagon
Zeiss Otus 85f1.4 Apo Planar
Zeiss ZE/Milvus 135f2 Apo Sonnar
Contax N 400f4 Tele-Apotessar (EF converted)

The existing Canon 17/24mm TSE lenses work perfectly with the Fuji GFX and allow a few mm shift within the sufficlent image circle. I expect the three new TSE lenses to work as well.

The Canon 100mm Macro (new version) covers well the Fuji sensor. Stopping down, a good corner sharpness can be achieved. Interestingly even IS works in combination with the GFX and the Steel adapter.

The Sigma Art 35/50/85/135 mm lenses can be used on the Fuji GFX.
The 35mm shows some vignetting at open aperture, the vignetting is reduced closing the aperture but image corners never become perfectly sharp.
The 50mm is better in that respect (less vignetting, better corner sharpness) but has to be stopped down to f8 for good corner sharpness.
The 135mm is incredible: hardly any vignetting at open aperture and already good sharpness. Stopping down by 1-2 f-stops provides perfect sharpness corner to corner.
I did not test the 85mm yet but I expect it to work quite as well as the 135mm.

The three Otus 55/85mm and ZE/Milvus 135mm lenses cover 44x33mm with slight vignetting at open aperture and provide good to very good corner sharpness after stopping down 1-2 f-stops.
Astonishinly the Contax N 400mm lens covers the 44x33mm sensor with good corner sharpness already at open aperture.

w/ Fotodiox mechanical adapter Leica R - Fuji GF
Leica R 60f2.8 Macro
Leica R 100f2.8 Apo Macro
Leica R 180f3.4 Apo
Leica R 180f2.8 Apo

The four R lenses cover the Fuji GFX image circle at any aperture with very good corner sharpness if stopped down a bit.

w/ Fotodiox mechanical adapter Zeiss CY - Fuji GF
Zeiss CY 16f2.8 F-Distagon (Fisheye)
Zeiss CY 35f2.8 PC Distagon

The F-Distagon provides a nearly fully round image on the GFX.
The Contax Yashica 35mm PC lens works perfectly on the GFX due to it's sufficient image circle. It even allows a slight shift movement and results in a 28mm FOV.

w/ Steel AF-adapter Contax 645 - Fuji GF
Contax 645 35f3.5 Distagon
Contax 645 45f2.8 Distagon
Contax 645 55f3.5 Distagon
Contax 645 80f2 Planar
Contax 645 140f2.8 Sonnar
Contax 645 210f4 Sonnar
Contax 645 350f4 Tele-Apotessar
Contax 645 350f4 + 1.4x Mutar
Contax 645 120f4 Apo Makro-Planar

All Contax 645 lenses work perfectly with AF on the GFX. They extend nicely the range of focal lengths (up to 490mm with the extender) and fill the gaps of the current Fuji lens line. The 120mm Makro lens is an affordable option to the Fuji version.

w/ Fotodiox mechanical adapter Hasselblad V - Fuji GF
Hasselblad Zeiss CF 50f4 FLE Distagon
Hasselblad Zeiss CF 100f3.5 Planar
Hasselblad Zeiss FE 150f2.8 Sonnar
Hasselblad Zeiss CF 180f4 Sonnar
Hasselblad Zeiss CFE 350f5.6 Superachromat
Hasselblad Zeiss CFE 350f5.6 SA + 1.4x Apo-Mutar

The mentioned Hasselblad 6x6 lenses work perfectly on the Fuji. Up to the 180mm Sonnar, they allow shift movements when adapted via a Mirex shift adapter.

w/ Fotodiox mechanical adapter Mamiya 645 - Fuji GF
Mamiya 645 24f4 Fisheye
Mamiya 645 50f4 PC
Mamiya 645 200f2.8 Apo

These Mamiya 645 lenses work perfectly well, of course manual focus only.
The 50mm PC lens allows 10mm shift.
The 200mm Apo is a reasonably priced nice short tele lens with excellent IQ.

Has anyone tried the older Nikon PC-E lenses on the GFX? I have the 24, 45, and 85, and am well aware of the problem with setting the aperture on any Nikon "E" lens.

I am particularly interested in use of the 85 PC-E on the GFX. I have pre-set the aperture on mine to f/8 courtesy of a friendly Nikon owner and have used it on the Fuji X T-2 but would love to see and hear how it might work on the GFX as it is a macro and would almost certainly cover the sensor when used as a macro.

Thanks.
