Visiting South of France - feedback needed.
« on: August 27, 2006, 04:58:45 pm »

Hi All

We are travelling to the South of France and intend to visit the Camargue area. Though our trip (apart from the journey down) starts in the Argels sur Mer area (there for one week) then as mentioned we want to stop in the Camargue area for 2/3 days (I know that is not enough) then head north probably via Lyon and Reims & then back to Calaisfor the ferry.

I would welcome any feedback specifically about places to stay in the Camargue area that gives easy reach access to the Camargue National Park.  The ideal hotels for us would be coastal ones.

Having said that if you have any insight about the area and places of interest to recommend ~ for example I have heard that Arles is worthy of a visit.

Oh, FWIW we decided on France because as UK residents we can go by car and avoid all the hassle currently associated with air travel.

TIA for any guidance

Can't help you with the Camargue, but we just returned from a few weeks in the south of France, and stayed (among other places) in Collioure, which is virtually next door to Argeles.  Spots that I found interesting photographically:

The town of Collioure itself... a particularly picturesque town and harbour.  From the road above the town (The D61, I think) there are spectactular viiews toward both Collioure, Argeles and Porte Vendres.  But be warned, the road is a bit of a white knuckle affair.

A day spent on the Petit Train Jaune up into the Pyrenees with a bit of time to do some hiking near the top (say from Mont Louis) is well worth it.  Here is a link to the SNCF page describing the train:  Le Petit Train Jaune

The town from which you board the train Villefranche-de-Conflent is itself worth a look.  A small town with its original mediaeval walls still intact.

Here are a few images from around Collioure:

Have a great trip!

Hi Mark

Thanks for the feedback about the area.

Hmm! a white knuckle road eh! My SO does not like such roads ~ heights and her do agree, when I suggested we do a trip to Andorra and looked at the map showing all the hairpins I got a very frosty look.  I have to study the roads and see how we go.

However, trains she likes so that is a good one to check out.

Incidently, your images are not showing

Thanks again for insight.

Odd... they were showing up immediately after I posted the reply: but not later.  I think I have fixed it, but not knowing what was wrong in the first place, I can make no guarantees.

I will however be updating my web-site over the next week, and there will be a few images from around Collioure in the update... stay tuned, as they say.

best,

A nice, picturesque little village within the Camargue area is [a href=\"http://www.ot-aiguesmortes.fr/UK/Monuments.htm]Aigues-Mortes[/url]. Access to the National park is quite close. Aigues-Mortes is a medieval city that used to have a harbour to the Mediterranean Sea. Louis the IX left for two crusades from this place.

There are a few little hotels available, but make sure you book early as it is always quite crowded. I enjoyed the "Le Saint Louis" on several occasions, right within the old city, but there are many more.

Arles is worth visiting, not only because of the famous International Festival of Photography, which takes places every year in July. Exhibitions of the artists can be seen in various places until mid-September.

When travelling back the Rhone highway, you might want to stop by in Avignon to see the famous castle of the Popes.

Lots of things to see in this area. You could probably spent weeks here...

Enjoy your vacation,

Andrew

Went to the Provence earlier this summer and had a great time. Also went to the Camargue for a day. For more info have a look at the article on my website: http://www.vanruitenbeek.com/artprovence.shtml

I was in the south of France a few years ago and spent a day on the Cremargue.

IMO there is so much to shoot in Avignon, Arles and Aigues-Mortes, then up to Nimes or over to the Luberon valley or Les Beaux, that the Cremargue pales a bit.  BUT! There are some dunes (small) on the beaches to the east and I found this sleepy little 60's-hippy-style trailer park on the west end of the Cremague.  But all-in-all one day there should do it.

Cheers,

Mark these files were "X"'d out in your post as it appeared on my browser so I could not see them. Perhaps some I.E. setting on my computer doing this. It has happened elsewhere too. Instead I went to your website and had a look. Just excellent photography - congratulations.

If you can do it, visit also the region near "vallon pont d'arc".
I was there 3 times.
