mac os Sierra and 5K sluggish ?
« on: August 07, 2017, 05:29:39 am »

Guys,
I did just update to 10.12.6 sierra from el capitan, where I have chosen the largest scaled option ( the numerical options are gone) but the line below the monitor suggests 'looks like 2048x1080'.
So resolution looks ok. Can't really compare to El Capitan...
But what bugs me is the window says " using a scaled resolution may affect preformance", which is exactly my impression.
Display of scrolling and moving of the mouse seems to be less fluid.
Does anybody have that too ???
I am on a Macpro with a Eizo CG318
cheers

Hi Stephan,

You screen is a 4K screen (4096x2160) so setting the "looks like" resolution to 2048x1080 is perfect because of the pixel doubling in MacOS for high DPI screens. This is exactly what default scaling should be. This will not affect performance. If you choose another scaling then it will affect performance, e.g. a scaling with more pixels in the "looks like" since the virtual display space will be double that in each dimension then scaled to the physical resolution of the screen for display. But have a look to see if the refresh rate is 60Hz.

No, you can find it in the About this Mac, System Report, Graphic Displays and then look for the graphic card (maybe only one) then see if the refresh rate is 60Hz. If it is not then I think there is no way you can set it as the hardware will not support 60Hz. You need display port 1.2 as far as I remember. I don't have a 4K monitor any more, so can't check. I got the new LG 5K that I wrote about.

refresh rate is 30hz...
and you mean that the sluggishness could result from that ?

Absolutely. A slow refresh rate will really mess up your experience. I have a 4k monitor on my MacPro and use the largest screen setting HDMI will do for 60hz refresh. I also am using a control panel called "SwitchResX" which has made a big difference and allows a default screen size to be set and kept. Costs a few bucks and well worth it.

but my Eizo apparently only does 30hz through Hdmi, according to the introductory specs, that I just googled...

I couldn't find it, but it should be possible to have a graphics card that support display port 1.2 with 60Hz. According to a document I saw Mac Pro 2013 supports 4K like yours at 60Hz.

can you believe it.
today I start the Macpro, wonder where the perceived sluggishness has gone, go into the SysProfiler and voila ...
today it says 2048x1080 @ 60hz
So I wasn't halluzinating yesterday after installing Sierra, it was at 30hz.
All good now
Thanks for your hints and remember " even if we've installed shuff and it seems to work but not quite, a little restart can help "

cheers
