I am having a problem with Lightroom CC 2015.12 and Lightroom 5.7.1

Since upgrading to LR CC 2015.12 I am experiencing very slow performance in both the Library and Develop Modules. Upwards of 30-60 seconds to open an image, whereas before upgrading my system was running fine with no delays when opening images. Sometimes images will open quickly as they did before the upgrade but only 1 or 2, by the 3rd image everything slows down again.

I have optimized my catalog, checked to make sure I am using the latest driver for my video card, Standard Preview Size is set to Auto (1920px), and Preview Quality is set to Medium. I have tried with GPU Acceleration turned on and off with no change in performance.

I am aware of all the discussion on the various forums about Lightroom CC 2015 performance issues.

What I do not understand is why since upgrading to CC2015.12 is the performance of my older standalone version 5.7.1 affected as well?

I purposely keep both versions on my system to avoid such problems in case of upgrade issues.

Both versions are on an SSD that has about 50% free space as are my Lightroom Catalog and Previews.

I do not know what else to check or where to look in my system to see what can be done to get back the performance I was getting before the upgrade.

Is my only option to uninstall Lightroom CC2015.12 and reinstall an earlier version that did not cause any issues with performance? What if any are the pros and cons of taking that step, and how might that affect my version of 5.7.1?

What other possible steps might I take? What might be the cause of the problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System info for both versions is as follows:

I have no particular technical background for sleuthing such issues, but the first thing that struck me is the age of your operating system: Windows 7 is pretty long in the tooth by now in terms of "computer years" and I'm just wondering whether some recent changes under the hood to the software aren't playing nicely with Windows 7 - what and why I wouldn't have a clue, but generally seeing issues of this kind with upgrades one would naturally look to possible frictions between the newer version of the app and an aged OS. Just guessing here.

It would seem that one thing common to both Lightroom CC and the standalone version would be the catalogue.  I have a vague memory that when I first opened CC 2015.12 after upgrading (on a Mac) there was some onscreen message about the catalogue being updated.  Could this be it ?

To check you could try creating a new (temporary) catalogue with just a few images and see if the problem goes away ?

Or perhaps it is as Mark suggests ?

I don't think Windows 7 is an issue. Try resetting the preferences and clear the cache. Also, increase the size of cache.

I'm assuming you aren't opening the same catalog, since you can't open a LR 5 catalog with version 6 or CC 2015 and vice versa.  I'm not sure why you would keep both versions in case of an upgrade problem, since you can always downgrade to the previous version if you upgrade (within the same major release).  I'm not sure how keeping version 5 would help.

If this was a typo and indeed you are using LR 6.xx stand alone as well as LR CC 2015, those versions share many of the system files, so upgrading one would affect the other.

As to why it's suddenly "slow", testing a new catalog, clearing the cache, resetting preferences all seem like logical steps to try and isolate the problem.  It also could be some internal changes that are struggling with the older operating system.  It also could be not related to LR at all, but a hardware issue.

One thing to check is if the GPU was enabled with the update, and you need to disable it (several old GPU's struggle with LR).

Not opening the same catalog.

Kept both versions because at the time I subscribed to Adobe's Photography Plan I was not certain I would stay with it and wanted at least a workable version of Lightroom. Also, I do not mean to sound flip, but why not keep both versions? Is there a downside other than hard drive space?

I have checked the GPU and found no difference in speed with the GPU on or off since the upgrade.

What I really do not understand is how or why upgrading CC can affect 5.7.1?

As a test I created a new catalog in CC2015.12 with approximately 300 images in it (my main CC2015.12 catalog has over 20000 images). When I open Lightroom CC 2015.12 with the new/test catalog it runs much faster, less that a second to open an image.

Would the size of the catalog affect performance?
Could the upgrade have somehow corrupted the catalog? I do have the catalog backed up, so if necessary I could remove the current catalog and replace it with a backup. If I do need to replace the catalog might it be best to use a backup that was created before I upgraded to CC2015.12?

Many thanks to everyone for all the help.

Fred,

You are using the same settings for both applications

Settings Folder: C:\Users\Fred\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom

I'm guessing that the 2 version, one very old and the other latest, are fighting each other to manage their settings. Particularly the preferences file.

There is really no benefit to keeping that old of a version around. If there is a problem with a new version, then roll back to the previous. Despite Adobe having some quality control issues, things are fairly stable right now. Hang on to your standalone authorization code, if you get completely fed up with the CC plan you can always reinstall the last authorized stand-alone version again.

I'd suggest un-installing both versions. Rename the folder C:\Users\Fred\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom to ZZ_Lightroom. Install the latest CC version. Then copy any presets from the ZZ_ folder to the new install settings folder(s).

No, the preference files are different. Lightroom 5's will be called Lightroom 5 Preferences.agprefs, Lightroom 6's will be Lightroom 6 Preferences.agprefs.

Physical problems are likely to explain why 5 and 6 are affected.

How much hard drive space? Review hard drives for any sign of malfunction.

Purge the ACR and video caches.

Review the video card drivers. Up to date? Updating may be the solution - or may have introduced the problem.

Tablet? Update its drivers.

Zap the preferences? More relevant on Mac, but corruption unlikely to affect both 5 and 6 pref files. No harm trying.

Another recomended action is to optimize the catalog. File -> Optimize Catalog

Hard drive space is 571GB free on a 960GB SSD
Caches have been purged
Graphics card driver up to date
Not using a tablet
Catalog has been optimized

As a test I created a new catalog with 300 images (regular catalog has over 20,000 images) in CC2015.12
Performance with this test catalog was much improved.

Does the number of images in a catalog affect performance?

I am wondering if it might be hardware issue, as Wayne suggested.
Any ideas on how to check the hardware, what to check etc would be appreciated.

Just want to update everyone.
Looks like the issue was that some of the RAM went bad and was causing the problem.
I have since replaced the defective RAM and so far things are back to normal.

Thank you to everyone that offered their help and advice.
I really do appreciate your time and efforts.

I would like to thank you for the follow-up info informing us of the solution to your problem.  Many people ask for help with a problem that others are having only to find the solution elsewhere and never share their newfound solution here. Thanks.

Just want to update everyone.
Looks like the issue was that some of the RAM went bad and was causing the problem.
I have since replaced the defective RAM and so far things are back to normal.

Thank you to everyone that offered their help and advice.
I really do appreciate your time and efforts.

Fred, I'm glad you solved the problem.  How did you determine it was bad RAM and which RAM stick it might have been?

I was advised to check my RAM with MemTest, which immediately showed errors.
Since the RAM sticks were several years old I felt it best to replace all four sticks.
