Long Exposure Landscape work
« on: July 30, 2017, 10:47:03 pm »

I'm experimenting with long exposure work.  13 stops ND + grad ND + polarizing filter.
3 minutes 16 seconds @ ISO 100.

Lifeguard Station, Imperial Beach, CA

That looks super effective!  I really love the tone.  Did you find the still subjects suitably sharp after such a long exposure?  Any issue with movement from wind etc. or not enough to be an issue?

Great palette! For a exposure that long the effect in the sky is relatively subtle (in the furthest background), which is a good thing here, I think, it's not too blurred, but still realistic.

Needs less ND, more DOF, imo. Tracks are distracting. Colorscheme is beautiful.

Also, seems more like a seascape than landscape, no? ;-)

In this case, the lifeguard stand is acceptably sharp.  And, just FYI there were a few people who wandered through the scene during the exposure, but they were moving fast enough not to register.

Other attempts on this day (of other subject matter) were affected by wind or other movement in the frame.

Yes, quite fortunate.  The clouds were more of a fog bank that was just sitting off the coast and not obviously moving.  I'm discovering that there is as much serendipity and luck involved in composing "over time."

If you look at the horizon it is relatively sharp, though somewhat affected by movement.  Plenty of DOF in the shot, just impacted by movement over time.   I debated on whether to "smooth out" the tracks in the sand.  Decided to leave them alone (for now!).

Ah, yes, so maybe it is double jpg compression on the serverside? The horizon becomes relatively soft, and the problem is that the "background" then loses depth. This is not a problem for the impression of the image/color-composition, but watching the image as realistic, it now looks like a chair in front of a painted wall 5 yards away.

Maybe it needs another static object in the far distance for sense of perspective?

:)  Actually, you described perfectly why I like it!  There's a sense of the surreal to long exposure work that I like.  I'm drawn to the non-literal a lot of the time.

I like the tracks, too - all works well together for me.

I like the tracks: The texture contrasts nicely with the smoothness of the sky / sea.
