Zeiss Batis 25mm f2????
« on: July 29, 2017, 04:23:39 am »

I'm contemplating getting the Batis 25mm,
I've read lots of reviews on it and they are extremely complimentary, positive reviews with the only slight negative issue being CA's that are a little worse than I'd like but should be correctable in post.
I've got the lovely "little" Sony 28 f2.0 already, its small size, light weight and very good IQ don't leave me wanting for much, but I'd prefer a 24 - 25mm lens and the Zeiss lens is meant to have that special character.
My intention would be to sell the 28 if I get the 25, (but well, hmmm, time will tell).
It will be complementing my prime collection, (CV10,15, FE28 f2.0, 35 f2.8, 55 f1.8 and 90 f2.8 Macro) and I use the A7R2.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether I'm just throwing away money or if I'm going to lurve the Batis and have no regrets?

I have both of these lenses and use them during my travels. The Batis is really closer to a 24mm and delivers the usual Zeiss qualities of great colours, contrast leading to excellent sharpness through the entire field. It is my go to street shooting lens when a wider angle is required. It also makes for an excellent landscape lens.

The Sony 28mm is extremely compact for an f2 lens and coupled with my A6000 is my setup when I'm out not specifically for photography. It has excellent sharpness in the center, but the extreme edges never are as sharp as the Batis.

If you are to have only 1 of these, my choice would be the Batis...but I would keep both if possible.

The first image is from the 28mm, second from the Batis.

The Batis 25 & 85mms are the two main reasons why I've held onto my Sony system. Both are fine lenses. I'd likely hang onto the 28mm in any case, though, as it pairs up real nice with both your 15 & 55mms.

It's a very good lens at a very useful focal length. Not much to say about it really, just peruse Zeiss website for the technical stuff.

I bought one, there was a mint used one in one of the online camera stores, it arrives today, so my prime collection gets larger, just when I think I have all I want I invent a reason to get something else, I just count my lucky blessings I can afford to buy stuff like that and not have to worry.
