Devils Tower - In IR
« on: July 08, 2017, 04:24:37 pm »

I stopped by Devils Tower on my way to vacation in Minnesota.  I've camped and hiked here before, but I wanted to try a little IR photography and it was only an hour's detour on my road trip.

I took some film shots as well with my Fuji G690 BL and might post them later.

These are just a few quick shots I took during the 30 minute visit to the park.  Now I wish I took a longer visit to get just the right shot/setups, but these'll do!

All were shot with a stock Fuji X100S and a Hoya R72 720nm IR filter.  The X100S really works well with the IR filter as it has a very weak hot mirror on the CMOS.

Really nice images.  1 and 4 for me, but I think I like 1 the best.

#1 for me as well.  If you get another opportunity at the Tower, get in close, that is where it really excels IMO.

Very impressive set ... 1 and 3 for me as well, but I am more partial to 3.

Good series. What sort of shutter speeds were you getting?

Excellent! I am usually not a fan of IR but you have used it very skillfully to capture drama and mood.

Could you elaborate on this for me please, considering picking up an IR filter such as the Hoya for my X-T2.

Thanks everyone!  I only spent 30 minutes in the park.  I'll be going back soon to spend a couple days there.

Between 1 - 1.5 sec at base ISO and f5.6

Here is what a "hot mirror" is.

Most digital cameras have a very strong IR blocking filter, also called a hot mirror.  There are a few cameras out there that have a very weak IR blocking filter and you can use an IR filter with them to shoot at 720nm and above.  Many people send their DLSR into a specialist who can remove the IR blocking filter so that the camera will work with IR filters or can even do false color photography.

It looks like the X-T2 is pretty IR sensitive, so it should work with the Hoya R72 very well.

Thank you!

That was very diverting.  I think I'll give it a go... looks like fun.
