Software questions on PC -> Mac OS migration
« on: August 22, 2006, 07:01:00 pm »

Dear all,

I am seriously considering moving to the Mac side as soon as Mac Pro WS memory will have become more affordable.

My main concern is the existing and cost of migration of my existing Win software to Mac.

- PTgui doesn't exist on the Mac, does anyone have info on the quality of PTMac compared to PTgui, is there any migration path?

- Adobe softwares (PS CS, GoLive CS, InDesign CS), some say that Adobe will provide free migration, others claim the opposite, is there an official Adobe link explaning the status?

For each of the following piece of software, does anyone know the price of migration from PC to Mac?

- DxO 3.5 Expert
- Realviz Stitcher 5.0
- NeatImage
- RSP
- Nikon Capture 4.4
- Photokit Sharpener,
- Typical PS plug-in,
- MS Office,
- ...

Thank you in advance for your help on this.

I am aware of the existence of Bootcamp/virtualization software, but I would prefer to be able to run as many application as possible natively on the Mac to increase productivity.

Best regards,
Bernard

the new Mac's certainly makes it interesting now, the idea that you can run almost all the OS's on the one and same box, opens up a whole lot of new choices.

My take is why would I as a developer, develop a software for 5-8% of the market now, that this small percentage can just use Bootcamp and my "PC" version software can run just nicely. Why bother? why invest in that small group if I could not by some way recover that financially, given the extra coding required doing both!. /rant off! ;-)

I see this a great thing that we can have more choices, but at the same time i also see that we could limit our choices. I for one is very tired of see the same software distributed on the different platform, and finding that they offer different features on one over the other, and it goes both ways.

As for Adobe, I think the new, disk are dual OS, that you will have both versions on you installation disks, so i have read somewhere. And that you need to de-activate your key to install to the other OS. I will see where I can find it.

we are up for some interesting times

Hello Bernard,
A few months ago I purchased the MacBook Pro 15".  It is my first Mac.  Just today, I emailed Adobe support to inquire about the possibility of a migration option for PS2.  I will let you know when and what reply I receive.  Like you, my assumption is that PS2 will run more effectively OS10.

Q.Why can't I use my software on different platforms? For example, I'd like to install one version on my Windows platform machine and one on my Macintosh platform machine.

A.Macromedia policy is to design and provide software for specific platforms. When you purchase a single software license, you are permitted to install and use your copy of the software on a single platform. Adobe develops software for different platforms (such as Mac OS, Windows, Linux) and sells the software built for separate platforms as separate products. If you wish to use the products on different platforms, you must purchase a license of the software for each platform you will be using.

There should be a sidegrade but I don't know the cost.

The interesting thing is that you quoted Macromedia's Policy on Coldfusion but since Adobe bought them they now just ship a single "all platforms" product. Obviously they haven't updated their FAQ.

OpenOffice - it's better, free, mostly compatible, and multi-platform.

Bernard,

Let me answer for the ones I do know about.

Neat Image
New licence necessary, though I think you get a discount.

Photokit Sharpener
New licence necessary - 30% discount

Nikon Capture 4.4
My original version of Capture was dual OS, so all you need to do is download the Mac specific upgrades.

Best of luck

hi - DxO is free (you can have 2 machines, I have a version on my PC and a version on my intel iMac. However the current version of DxO (3.5) is not native intel so it's a bit slow... you'll have to buy DxO 4 to get a native intel.

Yes but in the same document, they use the name Adobe and this is on an Adobe site and an Adobe FAQ so I don't know if the Macromedia is a typo or what. Anyway, after doing a lot of searching, this is all I could find from either about multiple platform policies.

Or [a href=\"http://neooffice.org/]NeoOffice[/url], no need of X11.

Bernard, I don't have an Adobe link, but when I was evaluating a "move to Mac" option (which I think I am deciding against) I phoned Adobe and asked them. They told me they take back the license key for the PC version and supply us free of charge a license key for the Mac version.

Hi Bernard

I am a Mac user, and PTgui is available on the mac as a beta version. Have a look at their beta web page : http://www.ptgui.com/beta.html.

It seems to work well, but there are some truly horrible buttons in their user interface. Let's hope they are sorted out in the final version.

I hope all goes well with your mac migration, they really are great machines.

Regards,
Andy
