HP Z3200 fsck on startup
« on: June 30, 2017, 02:18:18 am »

Hello,

My Z3200 developed a problematic behavior. Every time I power it up it does FSCK (disk checkup). In the past it only did it when powered down incorrectly (crash, loss of power). The check goes fine and the printer works as usual besides that. The problem is it is a stress for the disk and is very time consuming.

BTW I've been printing in irregular (week to months) intervals throughout last two years with no problems and no clogs really. I just cannot afford to run it 24/7 (noise and power).

Can I do anything about this FSCK?

It's so great to have you, you helped me a lot in the past.

It *can* mean that the unit's internal hard disk is starting to fail and the system is trying to self-correct.

I think it is nothing to worry about, mine does it too.

Still i think it is wise to keep the printer on all the time-

money: electra costs here 40$ a year...
noise:  don't put it in your bedroom ;)

+ no fsck

It is critical that the Z remains on 24/7.  The micro-drip technology is designed to work that way, plus the printer goes through a periodic check throughout the day.  The power consumption cost is far less than you think.  Kers did a study on it and it was surprisingly minimal.

Howard is correct - the repeated fsck could be an indicator of drive/format board pending problems.  You can pull the formatter board yourself easily and look for a watch type battery.  Replace that battery and make sure all contacts of the board are clean.  Re-set the board and let the printer take all the time it needs to do another fsck.  If you let the printer run for 24 hours, shut it down via the front panel, then unplug it for at least 5 minutes, making sure the switch is in the off position before you replug it.  Replug it and turn the on off switch to on then watch carefully to see if the printer initializes without doing the fsck.  If so, the board and drive are likely fine.  If it continues with the problem, you might want to start looking for another formatter board and drive.

So to report back: it was the problem with the battery after all :-)

BTW I've seen a bunch of HDDs for Z3200 from China (like this) that are 1) unlocked (printer specific password is supposed to be set on the system initialization / boot) and 2) possible to transfer to other disks (another seller offered to sell SDD with the firmware). Maybe we should get one to have a "master" copy somewhere (there are legal concerns though). I might be buying one to experiment if time permits. PM me if interested.

Thanks for reporting in.  Yep, thought it was a battery issue.  Surprising that a little battery could cause such big problems.  Appreciate your feedback.
Will be interested in knowing the results of your experiments.

OK i will have a look at my battery too then
HPz3100
i have the following little problems.  ( printer prints well)

fsck checks after turning the printer on.
if i have the printer on for more than say a week - the utility program is not able to get any information about the papers used (- for calibration)
often i cannot turn the printer off with the button in the middle but i have to do it on the back...
the internal clock is always behind...

Yeah, try replacing the battery Kers.  It may solve some of the problems.

Be sure to clean the contacts when you replace the board.

HP recommends plugging the printer into a different outlet when having the issue you describe about the panel switch not powering the printer down.  I use a UPS and it comes in very handy during outages.

I'll be interested to know if the replacement battery solves any issues.

Best,

So, After 10 years of use i plugged the formatter board out for the first time...

Did not know it was that easy and the battery is a very common 2032 type.
can imagine it ran out of power after 10 years of usage.

Yes i think it has solved some problems...
One i still need to address- i have to changed the time inside the printer - cannot seem to find the place to do it.
( the clock was always behind so might be the same battery problem)

Go into Utility> Additional Settings> Open Embedded Web Server> Setup> Date & Time

That should fix you up.

No it is not there ( z3100)
I remember i did it once on the printer itself, but cannot find it- well, it is not that important...

Ah! thank you Kevin,
I have the service manual, but did not thought i had to go into it just to change the date...
Obviously at HP they thought the same and changed that later with the z3200

My brand new Z3200 does that. When you turn the printer on after having been off ( during lightening storms ) it goes up to about 80% and then stops booting up. I have to turn it off and restart and it always boots up the second time . Strange. I removed and replacd the formatter board and that didn't change anything. It does this about half the time. Luckily I don't have to turn it off very often.

Identical behaviour here too, Dean.
