CaptureOne styles packs - any previews?
« on: June 27, 2017, 06:28:51 am »

I'm tempted by the C1 styles packs, but they are a bit pricy to just buy in the hope that they include what you want. Is there anywhere - official or unofficial - I can see a preview of the different styles?

As far as I can see some are shown on the Capture One site, some are in the free download sample pack but the rest you take on trust.  They seem very pricey for what they are and it is unclear how they relate to the existing built in styles.

I picked up the styles sold at Capture One Styles many moons ago. www.captureonestyles.com
The web address redirects to the Phase One site.  I presume they bought the original out.   But they are still available at http://1styles.pro I have no clue if the Phase One styles are built upon these or have any relationship beyond the web address.

They were an interesting if mixed bag, some excellent, his Fuji and Kodak stock versions really had a strong echo of the older films.

There's an overview of the various styles on offer on the web here - https://imagealchemist.net/capture-one-styles/

The Styles available from Phase One (https://www.phaseone.com/en/Products/Software/Styles.aspx) have no relation to any other company or Capture One styles offering on the market.

They were all made internally by us at Phase One.

I'll throw our DT Capture One Style Pack into the mix for consideration. They leverage a very wide variety of tools produce a wide range of looks, and an entire category just for skintone/portrait renderings. We also have a subset of styles named Overdrive that purposefully override the limits C1 imposes on adjustment amounts (something unique to our style pack).

If anyone would like to do a review/comparison please contact me and I'm glad to arrange a discount.

Styles are a funny thing - hard to fully judge until you've spent a lot of time playing with them to see how the suit you. Likewise it's hard to know how much time was put into the creation of any given style. Some of the styles in our pack took only a few min to make (e.g. Ones that are a slightly different take on an existing theme). Other styles, including a Fuji 400H profile we finished recently for our Contax+Phase shooters (primarily wedding shooters) took around 100 hours of R+D and actual film shooting and scanning, and several betas tested by some top shooters... for one style.

If you're in NYC or LA you're welcome to come play on our local system. We have all of the major styles from different vendors/makers installed. We researched all of them while we were making our own.

I purchased these about a year ago. I use them often on RAW files, particularly the Fuji films, ACROS, Provia and Kodachrome. I also use the Fuji film profiles for XP2/XT2 sensors that are available online. These are good too!

I'm not so sure the latest versions available for sale. They look really expensive for the hobbyist. I guess if I paid nearly $50k for a PhaseOne MF system then the price of the new film styles might seem more reasonable.

Has anyone found any examples of what the styles in the styles pack do. Maybe someone has reviewed them and I can't find it.

I have downloaded the sample pack, and they look rather nice, but they also seem rather expensive to me, and without some examples of all the styles within a pack, its really impossible to decide whether they are going to be worth it to me, or to decide which one I should buy first. I can't simply just buy them all, and although I know I will inevitably buy the B/W pack, one of the colour styles packs may be of more use to me at the moment.

It seems unfortunate that Phase one give so little information!

Thanks,
Graham
