Genuine vs Compatible
« on: June 23, 2017, 02:40:21 am »

Hey guys.  Quick question.  Everyone I've spoken to has said the "compatible" cartridges are identical to the original ones.  No difference in the print.  Of course most of these people are people trying to sell their compatible cartridges.  Has anyone experienced any negative results using compatible cartridges instead of the original OEM ones?  Just curious.

Not sure what printer you're using but you might want to check to see if you void the printer's warranty by using other inks.

I recall the web site of one compatible ink maker where it stated that while their inks were excellent for highest quality you had to use the manufacturer's inks. This was as I recall a Swiss company, not the cheapest by a long way and highly thought of at the time.

If I had the link I'd post it but this was a few years ago.

Then again look at stinkyink and you pays your money and makes your choice. I choose originals :)

'compatible' inks vary hugely in quality. Some of the better inks offer similar results, but others are way off.
There are also plenty of stories around of cheaper 'compatibles' damaging or blocking print heads.

Most people I speak to who have problems with inkjet printers are using cheap 'compatible' carts.

I'm just gonna stick to my game plan. I'll go with originals. I just recently scrapped an 8300 with full 700ml inks. I kept them just in case. About a month ago I ran out of a color. I inserted the 700ml I'll tank from the 8300 and it recognized it and it worked. Last night I ran out of another color. I inserted the 700ml 8300 tank and I got an error saying ink not recognized. There's a company online that sells the little chips to swap onto the 8300 tanks so the 8400 recognizes it. Anyone ever done this before?

FWIW, in my black and white inkset development over the last two decades, I've seen and run dozens of fade tests.  I've never seen a third party color ink that matched the quality of the OEM inks from the 3 major printer makers -- Epson, HP, and Canon.  I search the literature (and particularly http://www.aardenburg-imaging.com/) to find the very best color pigments as toners for my carbon based B&W inksets.  The big three, above, always are on top of the list.

Outside of the specialised inksets such as Paul's above, you basically get what you pay for (well, actually that is also true for the specialised sets, but they are not attempting to match the OEM, but rather provide something different).

Do you have the name of the company that sells the chips that permit you to use cartridges from an 8300 in an 8400?

Whoever that says "compatible" ink is the same as OEM ink is just trying to peddle their ware and sell you snake oil. It will never come close and hence OEMs can charge the price for their inks. You can probably harvest the chip from the 8300 and place it in the 8400 but I'll be very careful so as not to damage the contacts inside the printer - that will be a very expensive mistake.
