New firmware for A7r2, A9, etc.
« on: June 08, 2017, 07:53:38 am »

New firmware just released.

There's a line saying it  'improves image quality when Long Exposure NR setting is OFF'.

Does this mean they've finally fixed the Star Eater problem?

Until we know, I'm not installing the new firmware.  It would have been ashamed to not be able to get this shot: http://www.paulroark.com/Campfire-MilkyWay-GTCamp-BW.jpg, which I just printed as large as I could on 36" wide canvas yesterday for a show at Gallery Los Olivos (http://www.gallerylosolivos.com/) in September.

I'd test it myself if I weren't short a few cameras at the moment. Had one with updated firmware, another with early firmware (with lossless RAW but without the star-eater problem).

That is a gorgeous shot, Paul!

I'm hesitant to update my A7rii immediately as I'm doing a trip to Uluru the week after next, and since it's behaving just fine right now I'd prefer to not introduce any gremlins until there's some confirmation.  Maybe when I'm back, but I expect plenty of folks will have tried it by then.

I really like the new firmware on my A7R2.  Not only does the shutter trigger wireless strobes faster than before, but there is a new AF feature for moving around the focus points, and being able to shoot at the same time.  I'd imagine the next A7R will have the joystick that will make AF point selection even better.

Thanks for the update, Robert.  I'm still not prepared to do it until after next week when I'm back from Uluru, but that sounds promising (particularly he autofocus point update).

Does someone know if the firmware has fixed this issue?

For the A9 it only changes the alerts for the high temperature warning, so... I don't think they fixed that.

About the star eater issue, it is not fixed yet: http://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/sony-a7rii-fw-4-0-star-eating/
