Sony A9 performance with adapted Sigma and Canon lenses
« on: June 03, 2017, 11:06:13 am »

Has anyone tried the A9 with Sigma and Canon lenses using an MC-11 or Metabones adaptor yet? How does the AF perform when shooting fast-moving subjects (I'm guessing Sigma lenses with the MC-11 will be better than other combinations)?

I'm not particularly interested in the A9 myself (need more MP, so waiting for an A9r, that will likely go head-to-head with the D820 and 5Ds2) but it would be a pretty good indication of what Sony has managed to do with its AF system and what will show up in the next high-resolution model. That the A9's AF performance is being reported as equal to the 1Dx2 and D5 seems to be a pretty good thing in itself.

Not sure with the metabones, but Sigma released an press note saying the Mc-11 has compatibility issues with the a9 that they are trying to resolve: http://briansmith.com/sigma-official-statement-mc-11-fix-sony-a9/

Considering native Sony lenses (G Master in particular, that I saw commented on) need updates to function with the A9, I wouldn't be surprised to find that adapters need updates and may not have had time to do so yet.

Indeed... I still need to update my 24-70 GM... not in a hurry... not planning to buy the A9

Sigma just released an updated version of the firmware for Mc-11, they are only mentioning better OS performance with Sigma 100-400 lens... not sure if this will improve the behavior with A9

For those wanting a long lens (500mm) to go on their Sony A9, if you were to buy the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS USM then apparently you can send it back to Sigma and get a mount conversion to Sony E-Mount for native mounting:
