I've posted this here before (long ago), but this remains one of my favorite images ever (as well as the only one to take home an Epson Pano Award when cropped).

This one is interesting for discussion's sake: is this minimalism, and if so, why? (open question, not a judgement).

I would not initially consider this minimalism, as there are too many elements combining to form the mood.

I have already shown these in the past on the abstract thread. But I want to underline the point that snow scenes are very conducive to minimalist imagery. Maybe it's a first for the second image.

You could probably define some ad hoc criterion, like requiring that passing the tiff through an image compression algorithm set to a fixed quality results in a reduction of file size by at least X times... It would be interesting to see if that correlated with subjective opinion :)

Hmmm. . . hmmmm. . . ?

I think you might want to crop out a bit on the left-hand side. Otherwise, +1.

I'm afraid that might make it too minimal, Bob. It's pretty much the same problem I ran into deciding about the vignetting.

Not really (for me). But this might work:

Yes, certainly more minimal. Although I'd prefer to keep the rock off-centre.

I don't quite agree with Slobodan on this one. I find it is quite minimalistic. Once the image is enlarged you can see it is really an oval resting on a triangle. And the somewhat over-sharpened granite (at least to me) becomes a background for the major shapes. Small it looks very busy, I think because of the sharpness of the granite which cause you to focus on the granite texture. Maybe you can diffuse the background a bit and allow the edges that create the shapes to be sharp. Can it be more minimalistic? Yes, but it then becomes a different composition and this one is reasonably minimalistic to me and, less the over-sharpened granite, quite good to my eyes.

Yes. But it is a lovely shot and would fit well in a "semi-minimalist" thread.   ;)

I think the border between minimal and minimalistic is broad and fuzzy. This probably isn't minimalistic but indeed a lovely shot.
Based on Eric's suggestion I will see if I can change the title of the thread  :)

I think this one also would fit on that broad and fuzzy border.

Why don't you just call it "Without prejudice 3" so everything's fair game and be done with it?

Or start a "Zen" thread, which is where the stones would fit well.

Minimalism is about reduction, not inclusion! ;-)

"Without prejudice" is without critique, only positive opinions.
Here I fully accept discussion of what's "in" or "out". Posting "out" is no problem as long as the poster can live with other people judging it that way.

But if you want to start a "pure minimalism without prejudice" thread feel free to do so, nobody will stop you.  ;)

It was meant as a figure of speech. Without prejudice kind of being the (tongue-in-cheek) lula garbagecanthread, where everything goes that doesn't seem to fit a category.
